DC gig economy is ruining our neighborhoods

You chose your neighborhood to avoid Camrys? Weird.

I don't know if you know this, but DoorDash and Uber exist pretty much everywhere. And you can't control who drives through your neighborhood.

DP. I might draw the same conclusion, informally, but before posting that, I'd want to draw out race-related specifics from the OP.

The post described age, car type, driving behavior & smoking/drug behavior, and questioned purpose. None of that is explicitly racist, and knee-jerk retorts assuming so without that further investigation are self-defeating, supplying those who might be racist with a wedge to divide those who are actively anti-racist from those sympathetic to anti-racism but not so active who also might have, say, in this case, interests in a more peaceful community/living experience.

Separately, suggesting people move in response to highly contested change is a facile retort, among the most societally and economically destructive options for resolution. That said, one wonders whether OP is reasonably evaluating the change they observe, or whether they are, themselves, allowing a knee-jerk conclusion to an incident or two that personally affected them.

This. People have lost their critical thinking ability. Though with the education system as it is, I have to wonder if people ever learned the skill.

More specifically to the OP, complaining about the gig economy is similar to complaining about the advent of cars creating more traffic as compared to the horse and buggy. The world evolves, OP.

Astroturfing is strong lately.

Then campaign for your neighbors to stop being lazy and go get their own food.

You should organize a neighborhood boycott of Uber, Doordash, Instacart, and other related services. The workers are there because your neighbors ordered their services. Please do this on Nextdoor or similar and report back on the results.

So you all like the pot smoking, black tinted window crappy cars recklessly speeding through your neighborhood? I’m sorry your standards are so low.

I abhor doordash. Everything about it is the worst. They basically hold your food hostage until you tip well. Food often smells like pot.

So don't use it? Yay capitalism!

The speeding is the only thing I have a problem with, no matter who is driving, including my neighbors.

So you are ok with someone driving around recklessly on busy DC streets while blowing pot smoke out their window as long as they aren’t speeding? Good to know.

Also they are a sizable percentage Drug delivery guys, not necessarily Door Dash. But Democrats wanted this in DC. I agree with previous posters, only way is to move out or get Republicans in town to lock up drug dealers.

We have never used doordash -- I have no idea why people like the idea of randos of the street handling their food -- I barely trust restaurant workers (have you seen the movie Waiting -- its part documentary) and am always courteous and patient with wait staff.

I hate when I order something from a legit retailer like Home Depot and end up getting delivery by some sedan rather than Fedex/UPS -- half the time the order is wrong.

And I guess you can also worry about bedbugs : https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1326235.page

This. I’ve never voted Republican in a presidential election (ever) but I vote straight Republican in every single DC election. I don’t even bother to look at who they are. I just know after living in DC for over 20 years that our Democratic run city is a joke. There needs to be some balance, which there never is. I hate MAGAS ( and really anyone who identifies as Republican at this point) but I understand why DC stands out as an example of a blue city gone wrong. This entire freaking city reeks of pot. Only Dems would let legalized pot get so ridiculously out of control. And thank goodness first he Republicans who are doing away with the speed cameras everywhere. This is why Dems consistently lose elections everywhere except in cities like DC.

Republicans prevented us from having a regulated legal recreational marijuana economy. Thank yourself.
