Big weather event coming tomorrow - what is APS gonna do?

Except that there’s no tornado warning. And nothing may happen here at all.

A tornado warning means there is an active tornado happening right now. No one has issued a tornado warning. A tornado watch means the conditions are such that a tornado could spin up at any moment. We do not have a tornado watch right now either. What we have is an advisory notice that these things could happen tomorrow afternoon. Maybe. These conditions could be widespread in a geographic area stretching from the PA border down into SC. On the other hand, maybe it will just rain. I think it's premature to make decisions about changing the school day tomorrow. We all just need to plan just in case.

My 5th grader is supposed to have the outdoor lab overnight trip tomorrow. We just got an email that it is still on for now but they’ll sleep inside.

Oof. Bad timing. That's unfortunate.

Get a grip and stop vomiting your anxiety all over this site.

Take it up with the National Weather Service

+1 I'm sick of this bs there are two threads OP started with the fake panicking. Pathetic af.

Hi, I'm OP. Simmer down. Didn't realize a simple question would be so triggering to some of you!

And no, I didn't start two threads. That other one is in the Maryland Schools forum and it's about MCPS, not APS. I didn't see it cuz I don't have time to lurk in forums that don't apply to my kids. And if I had, it's not the same thing because different school divisions in different states.

Now can we get back to a rational discussion?

+1. I'd like to know now so I can plan my work day around picking kids up.

The last time this happened, they announced last minute that they would not let kids leave at the end of the day. Then when they did release them, I had to drive to school even though it was advised not to. Walkers were kind of screwed, so I took a few other kids home. They should plan better this time and either don't have school or release at lunchtime.

It's a level 4 so yes, it should be seriously. If you think it's just anxiety, sure go run around outside tomorrow afternoon, sit under a tree, climb a hill- and please report back!

Now a meteorologist is saying there could be cells as early as 10 am. They should just call it.

Early release for the late start elementary schools is typically 1:30, getting staff out by 2:00
I think it is a tough call for APS because it could go really, really poorly or be totally fine and it is difficult to predict. I generally think a full closure is easier on families than a delay but also see the need for instruction as I have missed so much with my Monday students this year.

That's too late

There would not be an actual official tornado warning a day ahead of time. That's not how these things work. We are in a level 4 moderate risk which is highly unusual.

Please educate yourself.

Staff members do not have to stay after the buses have been dismissed. Admin can give everyone permission to leave right after dismissal—just like they do before TG or winter break.
