Big weather event coming tomorrow - what is APS gonna do?

Seeing some concerning reports and remembering past wind storms. Wondering if APS is going to close early or call it altogether?

Normal school day.

he squall line is supposed to be most severe in the late afternoon to evening... but please monitor forecasts tomorrow for changes. This is a very unusual, perhaps unheard of set-up for some parts of VA. The risk of tornadoes is surprisingly high (which means, individually, we each have a low chance of seeing one, thankfully). There will be high winds, therefore some down trees and power outages. However it's very difficult to assess the potential damage to the region. Some parts will be hit more than others. You might get nothing at all.

Are Montgomery County and Arlington County now the same place?

The people in this forum not taking a tornado warning seriously makes me wonder about people in general. Schools should close by 1. No the school is not the safest place because traveling after such an event will be dangerous with wires down and debris in the road.

Early release for the late start elementary schools is typically 1:30, getting staff out by 2:00
I think it is a tough call for APS because it could go really, really poorly or be totally fine and it is difficult to predict. I generally think a full closure is easier on families than a delay but also see the need for instruction as I have missed so much with my Monday students this year.

I think with it being upgraded to a 4 out of 5, and start time as early as 1 - we will be cancelled tomorrow.

At a minimum, all afternoon activities should be canceled. I’m an emergency manager, this is a big deal. We do not want kids on busses or walking in severe weather of this magnitude.

Anticipating and planning for things that might cause a change in routine is the opposite of "vomiting anxiety". On the other hand, people who are so anxious that they over react to people seeking information should probably get support for their mental health.

This is an event that could impact school, leading to a closure, an early dismissal, or issues where buses are held at school. The pattern of previous closings tells us that. Any smart parent, unless maybe a SAHP who can easily accommodate all three, should be considering what their plan will be now. Doing so doesn't mean you think a change in routine is or isn't a good idea, or that you're hoping for a change in routine. It's simply good parenting to look ahead and make contingency plans.

From Capital Weather Gang:

"Lots of questions about what schools will do Monday because If dangerous storm potential. We don’t know… but imagine some may cancel after school activities or even dismiss early.
It’s tough because the exact timing is uncertain… don’t want dismissal when the storms are coming through. Models have shifted squall line somewhat later which is good because should give time for folks to get home but timing could still change. Schools will need to monitor forecasts and coordinate with NWS and their emergency management agencies on Monday.
