anyone getting call backs for DESA?

Can confirm there were 10 kids at vocal auditions today. There’s another one next Wednesday. Family interviews would be next step. Hope everyone’s kids had a good experience.

The order: Audition then callbacks then quite a bit later, family interviews. Then a decision. Family interviews are still part of the audition fyi.

Maybe things have changed, I have a senior now, but when my DD was applying if you got to the family interview that is really about making sure the student and family understand the level of commitment required and the very long day. Assuming no surprises that is a very good sign.

Good luck all, DESA is not perfect but it has been a great fit for my student.

Vocal was send in a video of your singing. Then you got a callback. And then on Wednesday at the callback they told us parents that after this coming Wednesday’s callbacks, they would decide who to bring in for a family interview. Sounded like it would be the first full week of March. Good luck to all!

Now waiting on family interviews! Our student applied for theater & instrumental and we were told we'd hear anytime between Feb. 17 and the first week of March. Has anyone received an interview notice yet?

Was anyone at vocal yesterday? If so, How many kids were there? And did they give any updates on when family interview invites might go out?

I contacted the school directly today, since timing re audition invites has definitely been unclear....

DESA emailed me a response at 12 pm Monday 2/9, saying that the visual arts department is still actively reviewing portfolios. So, as of now: no news is not necessarily bad news.

I have a student in the visual arts department. We lost the department head this year so it is new people engaging in a new process so it is taking longer than normal. They are still actively reviewing portfolio's.

If the program you’re applying to says there’s a mandatory summer program for incoming freshmen but won’t have the dates until April and you’ve already paid for a summer program elsewhere, has there been flexibility in the past on “mandatory?” DC really wants to attend if they get an offer but we are past refund dates for their existing program.

Trying to set expectations and figure out if this is a question we ask if we get a family interview.

The summer intensives are generally in June, tending toward later in the month. The actual weeks that will be "mandatory" for your pre-frosh will depend on their department. The website should have info on when the intensives took place in previous years.

Also, depending on your department, there may be some flexibility if the camp you're signed up for overlaps with the department. Last year our instrumental music kid was excused from a portion of the DESA intensive because they were already at band camp. Definitely ok to ask about this in the family interview.

You mean the afternoon workshop? But no news after that?

That may have been your perception, but while the family interview may focus on commitment, etc, you need to know that you are absolutely not in because you got a family interview and that it can absolutely also be a dealbreaker. Tell your kid especially not to sit there and let parents do all the talking.
