They (SACC) took away 3 days this year because they were FORCED to work 3 extra full days (21 hours) when the dumb early release dates were sprung on them. 7 early release dates causing the SACC employees to watch kids for those extra hours meant that they would cut 3 full days from their calendar which is only FAIR. I don’t even know why the powers that be made the SACC people watch the kids for those extra hours when they apparently have school staff to watch all the kids who have “childcare hardship.” They have to start watching afternoon SACC kids on early release dates at their early dismissal time, when childcare is already available at the school at the same time already. WHY? Don’t know why there are 2 separate childcare services provided at the exact same time when SACC staff can just start their shift at regular school dismissal time until 6PM. This way they wouldn’t need to cancel 3 days. |

If they follow their own bar for opening schools (minimal plow mountains blocking bus stops and cross walks), they'll be closed most of the week if not all. Even if they get crews out to deal with it, it logistically takes a lot of time. They should have been shoveling out the important areas all week but their lack of doing the right thing before doesn't make it okay to force kids back to school without it being safe.
They also haven't shown a lot of consistency in their decisions so whether that's actually what they do is up in the air. Reid made a questionable call last year in a desperate attempt to get kids back after winter break. I could see her doing the same again. |
I promise you, FCPS doesn’t give a single thought to what parents want or don’t want. |
Agreed. The conditions are not safe. Open when they are safe enough and not before. |
|
They want another week.
My friend on facebook posted let try again in March. |

There aren't that many school districts left that are both closed and not offering virtual learning. https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2026/02/01/school-delays-dc-maryland-virginia-snow-storm/

| Closed Tuesday and Wednesday, with a little melting the sidewalks and blocked lanes get cleared for re-opening Thursday (2 hrs late). |
She’s impossible to predict because she has so little spine and integrity. I think she is willing to make a political decision at the expense of children’s safety, so it’s possible she will forge ahead even if the bus stops are still mountains of snowcrete on Tuesday. I know some parents are fine with that, but I am a very cautious person. I don’t want anyone’s child to be hurt, and there are currently a lot of risks at play that could lead to tragedy - kids standing in the road, kids falling on the ice, kids not being visible to cars using the road… I don’t buy the argument “it’s not going to get better, so let’s charge forward despite all the risks.” That seems foolhardy to me. |
We live a mile from our HS. My kids don’t drive yet. Two thirds of the route which passes the ES is sidewalk behind wood fences of several houses. None of that is shoveled. Not sure where you are, but the snow-ice concrete on our driveway has not yielded yet to the weight of our vehicles. We have a long driveway and only managed to get maybe half cleared before it became impossible to clear. We did manage to clear the sidewalk in front of the house for the kids. Bottom line: unless the other walks get cleared, Tuesday is a minimum 2-hour delay. The ice covered walks need pickaxes to get through. I’m from the upper Midwest — ice here has always been an issue here. Back home the snow is easier to deal with especially with all the equipment they have. |
| Wait am I taking crazy pills. She already announced Tues is a 2 hour delay. The question is if that’ll change to closure, but why are we acting like a preliminary decision hasn’t been made |
She said they anticipate opening with a 2 hour delay and will update tomorrow. |
Once they see LCPS manageable fine with a delay today I think they’ll do the same for Tuesday. |
This is the correct answer. |
FCPS will not do virtual. Remember that OCR filed against FCPS for COVID virtual, and FCPS had to provide compensatory services- because families complained. The other nearby counties did not have to do this. FCPS was singled out and made an example of for legal precedent and because of SEPTA advocates like Callie Oettinger. Stop suggesting virtual days. Kids with disabilities cannot access services. We don’t want computers coming home everyday, and we want less edtech. You cannot compare FCPS to these other nearby districts. Apples and oranges. |
We'll go back with a 2-hour late start tomorrow. A little melting isn't going to make a dent (and will refreeze tonight anyway). |
