8 year old gets up at 6:15. What time should lights out be?

They do. They don't wake at 6:15. They can do a later bedtime because they can wake later.

The ideal bedtime for OP's kid is earlier because the kid has to wake up early.

Agreed. Adequate sleep is one of those basic health/wellness/parenting things you need to give your kids, even if it is inconvenient or impedes the ability to do fun things. Just like you generally get them to school on time, give them their vaccinations, keep them home from school to rest when they have a fever, give them 3 meals a day, have them wear seatbelts, give them some basic amount of nutritious non-junk food. I always wonder why some parents put "sleep" in a different box.

My 8 year old had always needed his sleep. He wakes for school around 6:50. We do lights out between 8:00-8:30.

Sleep is so essential to present and future physical, cognitive and mental wellbeing. It is the foundation of healthy growth and development. If we needed to do a 6:15 wakeup, we would only do weekend activities, no week night ones if they meant cutting back on sleep.

It extremely unfortunate that so many children's activities are in the evening to accommodate for parent working schedules. It is at the expense to children's sleep.

Not OP. Yes, they are. Our school ends roughly at 3pm. Dinner is roughly at 6pm. That gives us ~3 hrs for after-school sports and a shower. Separately, our target bedtime is 8pm - because our DC does not need to be up until 7am, unlike OP.

What activities start at 3pm for school aged children?

If your kid wakes up later than OP, what time is wake up? I know so many 2nd-4th graders doing sport activities that don’t START until 7pm. 3rd grade DS insists many of his classmates go to bed at 9pm on weeknights.

Do they have to wake up at 6:15? I dont get people who say "my kid wakes up at this time every day no matter what". What happens when the clocks change?

That's fine in the winter but during the summer when it's full daylight that would be far too early.

Disagree. If the kid needs to be up at 615 they need to be in bed early. They can use room darkening blinds or something.
At 8yo my kid was asleep by 8 awake around 7. So i would aim to have lights out by 730 if waking at 615.

That's not the point at all, Kids don't get nearly enough time to be kids these days, When i was a kid we were outside playing until sunset and we still got up at 6:00am with no issues.

Mine wake at 8 and are out the door by 8:30. We're in FCPS. Many of the elementary schools have a later start time here.

We had early bedtimes growing up in the 80s. I can still picture my dad's booming voice in the neighborhood yelling for me to come home for dinner or bed. We had lots of time to play and run around - and we still went to bed at 7pm the first few years of elementary school. Kids didn't so many organized activities like they do now at those ages.

I grew up in the early 2000s, None of the kids in my neighborhood had bedtimes that early.

I'm sure it varies a lot by neighborhood. Presumably kids whose bus comes at 7:15am are going to bed earlier than kids whose bus comes at 8:30. School start schedules vary, as does the first child to be picked up vs the last. I'm just offering example of my early bedtime as an example that it isn't some new phenomenon. Also, a lot of parents do things I wouldn't have my own kids do. Maybe they buy their 5 year olds tablets. That doesn't mean it's a good idea for me to do the same.
