| Trying to adjust to a new morning schedule. How much sleep do kids need at this age? |
| My 7-year-old needs 11 hours, so bedtime is at 7 (usually asleep by 730), and wakeup is at 6 (or as late as 630). I feel like she needs more sleep than the average kid, though. |
| Bedtime should be 7-7:30. |
That's fine in the winter but during the summer when it's full daylight that would be far too early. |
| No later than 8:30 |
| My 7 yo needs a lot of sleep but he has a 7pm bedtime for 6:45 wake up. |
| ^ I just notice you said lights out. He gets 20 minutes with his light on an automatic timer. So that puts lights out at 7:20. Id probably say 7:30 for an 8 yo |
| My 9 year old goes to sleep at 8:30-9:00 and wakes up at 8:00am. |

Our ped is happy with 10 hours, which seems to fall within the standard rec (9-12) for this age. https://jcsm.aasm.org/doi/10.5664/jcsm.5866
Ten hours of sleep would mean the kid has to be asleep by 8:15. Assuming it takes him 20-30 minutes to fall asleep, lights out is 7:45. Your kid may need more or less time, but if you're not sure where to start, it's a solid initial target. |
+1 Most kids that age need 11 hours of sleep. Target 7pm, but flex to 7:30 on special occasions if necessary. Certainly not later than 8pm sharp, even in summer. |
| I would start the bedtime routine at 7pm — meaning bath, reading, brushing teeth, etc— with the goal of the kid being asleep at 8pm |
Mine is like this too. As for PP worried about summer sunsets, we just got blackout curtains. Sleep needs don't change with the sun. |
| Every kid is different. I think 8:00 goal without 8:30 the case sometimes is fine, especially if your kid seems well rested. |
Disagree. If the kid needs to be up at 615 they need to be in bed early. They can use room darkening blinds or something. At 8yo my kid was asleep by 8 awake around 7. So i would aim to have lights out by 730 if waking at 615. |
