I agree. America’s test kitchen always irks me because they always decide that the best version of a recipe uses some unusual ingredient that I don’t have on hand, like cola or plain yogurt something. I don’t want to have to go out a buy things just to make some really basic recipe like muffins or chili. |

Also not a fan of the competition stuff, but will forever love Jacques and Julia.
I have teens, though, and other than sports, the one thing we enjoy watching as a family are travel food shows—Kristen Kish, Padma Lakshmi, Gordon Ramsay. Overly scripted, but I still feel like we learn something. |
| I recently discovered “not another cooking show” on YouTube. Really helped me rekindle my love for Italian food. Good stuff in Asian stir fry’s too. |
| Delicious Miss Brown with Kardea Brown, great food and beautiful South Carolina scenery. |
They also have all these crazy non traditional time consuming techniques that are not practical for typical home cooks. |
| Alton Brown for the win. |
OMG the Galloping Gourmet -- someone else who knows that show! I thought I had dreamed it up. |
I don't get it. It's just dumb luck, not skill. They're given directions and are forced to bake something they've never made before. It's just hit or miss. I feel like an idiot whenever I get sucked into watching that show. It's Reality TV for really boring people. If they threw wine in each other's faces and pulled off their competitor's wigs every now and then it would make more sense IMO. |
Oh man, those shows helped me learn how to cook! I was in my early 20s, and they really did play an important role in my life. I miss the old school Food network days. I do like watching Joanna Gaines cooking show; sort of reminiscent of Rachael Ray in that she makes the most basic of food, but I just love her personality. |
+2 I love his simple recipes that work because he shows you the technique. |
| I like a few cooking shows on YouTube -- AntiChef, Cooking the Books, Tasting History |
This is interesting. I was given one of his cookbooks ages ago, and even though I’m an ok cook, I thought the recipes were ridiculously complicated. I assumed he wasn’t for me. Maybe I need to find his show—I love learning new techniques. |
The interesting thing about America's Test Kitchen is that the women all got more attractive and confident as the years rolled by while the men didn't. It's usually the opposite. Looking at them as very young women in the early days is a bit of a shock. They put on weight and carried it well IMO. |
Lol to your observation that goes beyond the foods |
