I know that Middlebury doesn't have any supplementals this year, but did any of your kids add a "Why Middlebury" essay in anywhere?

No. I made DS ask our HS guidance counselor. "Send an email to regional AO etc?" she said no.

I think colleges ask for what they want

Our counselor had my son write a brief email to the regional admissions rep after he submitted that was essentially a “why Middlebury.” He was able to talk about an overnight visit and the class he sat in on and some things he loved. She did not respond but he did get accepted, so I don’t know if it was annoying or effective.

No. They do allow you to get multiple LORs, so if DC can get meaningful recs, which don’t have to be just teachers, that gives an opportunity to expand the application.

Also DC’s alumni interview covered the “why” question. I know people say alumni interviews don’t make a difference, but DC told me his was pretty focused and intense. He’s a STEM kid, but the interview ended up taking a turn into literature and philosophy. DC said it seemed like the interviewer wanted to see if he could hold his own in those areas, so again another opportunity.

I know of two very strong kids that did not get in ED. They know what they want and I think the sum of parts gives them a good picture of each applicant. Just put it out there as best you can and hope for the best. It's an amazing school.

No, where would one even do that?

Presumably an email to the regional AO.

I know at least 2 from same public HS in MA who were both admitted ED last year. But both admitted for Feb. they were both very strong candidates- one was as double legacy.

Flat out rejected. 1540 SAT, ~93.5 GPA on 14 honors (School doesn't have APs + I knew this was weakest part, but thought that maybe ED + other parts would make up), tons of leadership throughout the school, research assistant for prof. at ivy+, very strong letters of rec, essay that CC said was one of the strongest he's ever read, good interview, full pay male, and even would have been more than happy to be a Feb.

Sometimes it's just not meant to be

to add: Goes to very strong school that feeds into Midd. Last year 4 kids got in ED1 alone

I’m sorry! Your kid sounds great and I’m sure will be happy elsewhere. Hope he’s not too disappointed. We are waiting on Swarthmore ED and know it’s a crapshoot- so tough.

Holy crud! That must sting. It's not a rational process, I keep reminding myself of that.

Maybe the AO didn't understand the school doesn't have APs?

I suspect he will end up somewhere great eventually but lots of sympathy meanwhile.

It might be worth having a teacher or outside adult read over the app too just in case there's something in there that could be misinterpreted. You may have already done that, and the answer is probably that it's just irrational, but just in case.
