I am thankful they are starting to count in certain parts of the US, and I will bear myself in patience in the ensuing traffic.

Wait- I feel the exact opposite. It's so dangerous for pedestrians when cars turn right on only green! So the second pedestrians are allowed to move, so are the cars. A lot of times there are so many pedestrians that cars can't turn right at all. It's much safer to turn right on red when pedestrians aren't present.

Usually the crosswalk sign changes first to give you time to get into the crosswalk instead of racing the right turning cars. However, don't expect the drivers to check that the crosswalk is clear. "Green means right-of-way."

Maybe in theory but in practice drivers are not looking out for pedestrians who trying to turn right on red. They are looking to the left to see if there are any oncoming cars while inching into the crosswalk. I don't turn right on red even when it it allowed and have been honked at by people behind me who want me to go- even if there are pedestrians in or approaching the crosswalk.

As a pedestrian, I’m most scared of crossing a street when drivers are trying to turn left onto the street I’m crossing. I’ve got the walk signal, but they have a green light. They spend so much time waiting for a break in oncoming traffic to make their turn, they forget to scan for pedestrians when that break finally comes.

I got on 370 by Rio (near Kohls) for the first time since this went up and waited through 6 or 7 light cycles. EVERYONE at this light is turning red and only about 6 cars per cycle were getting through.

Ha Ha Ha, I think they got rid of this sign!!! At least its not there today.

Squeaky wheel gets the oil!!

I check for pedestrians on my right or in front of me, and cars coming from my left. If I’m good to go, I go.

Why would you risk a ticket for this?

It's a very low risk.

There is also an intersection near me that the left turn used to be turn on green when clear to a dedicated arrow. Which, during peak hours, was needed. However, after 8pm or so, it really isn't and it should revert to a flashing red arrow so that you could turn when clear after stopping but it doesn't do this. I also routinely turn here when it's clear during off-hours, treating it the same way it used to be before they changed it. This is also a risk of a ticket, but again a very low risk.

100% this.

But I’m content to sit there and create a traffic jam so people can complain about it.

I still won’t turn right on red just because I’ve gotten myself out of the habit because of DC tickets. So now everyone behind me can wait. Too bad, don’t care.

+1

DC had to do this this year due to the high number of pedestrian deaths. I know there have been a high number of pedestrian deaths in FFX as well. We need to have no-right-turn-on red as the default; if communities decide it makes sense to allow rt on red at certain intersections, then they can post signs to that effect in the intersections where they want to do that. But for safety reasons the default needs to be no rt on red.

Totally agree.

All of the ones within a mile radius of SG Hospital are also a joke. Especially since the most dangerous move (the left on green from SG Road into the hospital) is still legal. Why that isn't green arrow only is beyond me. You can't see cars oncoming and they are usually going way too fast.

While I'm ranting, the left on Norbeck to Layhill is also insane. Just make it green arrow only please.

Omg, is that why the traffic around Target and Kohl’s in Rio is now insane? I went to Target Monday evening around 5:00 and it was a mess. I thought there must have been an accident. It was bad enough when they built Lifetime Fitness and the Carnegie and added that traffic to the intersection of Fields Rd and 370/Sam Eig right by 270, but this takes the cake.

Rio is absolutely gridlocked right now. Really regretting driving here this afternoon. Stuck on the 3rd floor of parking garage and nothing is moving, at all.

It’s not like weekend/holiday traffic wasn’t a mess at Rio in previous years. Taking away that right on red for traffic leaving Rio and heading toward 270 is insane. That’s a long light because they have too many high traffic roads feeding into that same intersection.

DC delays green lights until the two seconds into the pedestrian walk signal. That is a fine solution.
