SAHM is not retiring |
No pension. I will retire at 56. Spouse already retired at 62. Youngest will have started college.
We will have about $4 mil when I retire, not including the house. House is worth about $1mil. Our monthly expenses is currently $11K, with some travel, and I don't expect it to change much because whatever we save on having no kids at home and not contributing to the 529 any longer will be used for ACA private health insurance, which I know is pricey (we've been on it before). Our PITI is $2300K with $145K left on the mortgage at 2.75%. |
My spouse took the DRP at 57 and I will retire when I hit the MRA in late 2026- I work for a FinReg and my spouse was an SES. With the FERS supplement, our pension will be over $200K annually. We plan to take SS at 62, we belive it will become means tested.
Combined our TSP are about $4M. We have about $500K in cash and other investments. We don't have a mortgage and inherited a beach vacation home in Delaware. Kids are done with college, one has a masters. Both have a great entry level jobs and no debt. We had planned to work until my spouse was 62, but we are fine. |
We could retire young with $5-$6M net worth and several income producing assets but have a young child who is school aged for several more years. Spouse wants to work indefinitely and likes what they do. I will work another 8-10 years. We both own businesses. |
Left @56.
My Mega Corp was looking to reduce senior leadership via a voluntary package. 15 mos of severance and benefits at employee rate. Future incentives were paid out with severance. Have retiree healthcare and $100k pension( no cola). Spouse still working for now. NW around $6.3M (house is $900k of that), monthly expenses around $15k. Includes a lot of travel and recreation. Owe $25k on mortgage and done with that next year. No regerts, so glad to have my time back and less stress. Also glad not to be in a leadership position for the first time since my twenties. |
I briefly retired at 52 with a NW of about $9 million. But, I still had a child in HS, none of my friends were retired and I didn’t want to hang out with 70 year olds so I went back to work investing in and running a company. I retired at 61 with a NW over $25 million. Retiring is great but if you don’t stay busy and engaged in something you like boredom will set in. |
I’m projected to have 2.5mm by 50 (wife does as well), and house will be paid off by 56 without extra payments. Without the mortgage (that is, starting at age 56), our combined expenses would be 35k, which requires less than 1mm at 4% withdrawal. So trying to plan ahead on what to do with “too much money”. Might pull back on saving at some point or buy some nice watches. It’s a good kind of problem to have. |
Tooknthe DRP |
I’m hoping to retire at MRA+10 at the age of 57 in about 5 years. Current NW is around $3 million but about 1/2 of that is real estate equity so I don’t count it. I’m working on a long term care insurance plan (family history of dementia and a long time needing care) which I’m hoping to have paid off by retirement. Pension and social security will probably be around $3k a month but I’ll have lifetime fed health insurance. House is already paid off. I’m pretty frugal and live a modest lifestyle. |
47 yo, $17M NW, not old enough yet for SS, military pension, absolutely no regrets….life is great |
I just came to say, "you all are RICH"! |
Both retired at 55 four years ago. DW has $20k pension that covers most of our annual health insurance from ACA. Rentals and dividend income from brokerage account covers our our expenses. Rentals and 2 homes are all paid off and kids are done with college (paid via VEST/VPEP). We haven't touched our 401k/IRAs since retired except to convert DW's 401k to Roth. Those accounts increased about 30%+ since we retired. NW at retirement around 8mil and now about 10mil. Don't regret it a single second. |
How much do you have in your 401k? Do you have much in taxable account as well? At 56, we have $5.7 million 401ks and thinking about conversions when we retire in a couple years. |
55 yo, retired at 45. NW about $20M between spouse and I. No inheritance but have elderly parents. About $8M in Roths (accomplished by individual stock picking over the last 30 yrs starting small and buildf’ing with some “lucky” big winners). $100K Pension. $1.8M House paid off. Kids in college but costs are relatively small. Will have a lot left in 529 when they finish and will use for graduate schools. About $3M in 401Ks. $6M in taxable brokerage accounts (individual stock picking mostly in biotech, Pharma, medtech). Plan to take SS at 62. Looking at Roth conversion strategies to minimize IRMAA. No regrets retiring early. We stay busy with outdoor recreation, hobbies, extensive traveling through the year. Hang with friends most are still working but don’t find this to be problem. Have a plan if you retire early. Stay active and socially engaged. |
Were one or both of you in the military? How do you have no healthcare expenses or college expenses? |
