Please do not get him a vest. He's not a member of Mumford and Sons.

Yeah, it looks louche.
And it looks like the parents couldn't be bothered.

There’s probably truth to that - I wouldn’t be bothered to buy a kid a suit jacket just to please someone like you. The bride, groom and young people in attendance will not care.

The dress code is cocktail attire, the wedding is in the fall, everything will be inside. Are dress pants with a matching vest and a dress shirt enough?

This describes my wedding dress code. The little cousins wore what you described. They were very cute.

It’s not about getting away with anything. It is about looking appropriate but modern. Kids in a suit look stuffy and old fashioned.

He shouldn't wear socks and roll up the ankles too.

I agree with jacket and tie.
Not a vest.
He'll look like a bartender in training, or like he's the missing part of an a-capella group.

Haggar suits are cheap on Amazon. Stores near me don't stock much formal wear for kids.

You also get a much better selection of boy's dress shirts, etc.

Look for Nautica, Hilfiger, etc. if Haggar is too low end.

Just get a cute and cheap suit. H&M, Zara…wherever. My son got one at 8 from H&M. He wore it twice and we passed it on. He grew right out of the shoes DH got him, so instead wore new, clean sneakers.

Mom of boys here.

Kohls and JC Penney usually have the best selections of little boy suits and wedding type dress clothes at a reasonable price.

If you are shopping online, try Dillards

My son and his cousin were ring bearers at my sister's wedding last summer. They wore nice khakis, white and blue pinstripe button-down shirts, loafers, and matching ties (one in a necktie, one a bowtie). They looked adorable and were comfortable dancing all night. I think we got everything at Target.

Yes. Except we let ours get away with sneakers, but it was more church clothes than semiformal.

I try to keep khakis, one button down, and a navy blazer on hand for dress up events at every age. I have always been able to find a blazer at thrift stores or ebay. (Son is now 14.). He has attended a couple of funerals and lots of weddings. Also wore the blazer for high school visits and a dress up event for 8th grade.

Totally disagree that suits look old fashioned or stuffy on little boys. They look FORMAL, which is what this wedding is. So any little boy in a suit would look appropriate.
