4 am for so cal |
| I'm about three blocks from the San Francisco Bay on the second floor and ... am not excited. Last time there was a tsunami warning it was nothing. But we'll know more at 12:40 in the morning, apparently. |
This X10000. There was a really, really small one in Santa Cruz that was crazy when it hit the marina. Heck, some of the weather that doesn’t make national news is extremely powerful out here. We were down at Seacliff when the waves were really high and an hour later the wharf broke off. |
I’m not PP but you need to not scaremonger. Santa Barbara is only under an advisory, not a warning, and these are very different. https://www.countyofsb.org/4725/Tsunami-Advisory-Issued-for-Santa-Barbar Obviously OPs kid should heed any advice given by local officials, and I do think this has the potential for serious damage in some areas, but right now, Santa Barbara is not likely to be one of those places. It’s irresponsible to scaremonger as well as to ignore warnings. |
I hope you're right, but this was the planet's 6th strongest earthquake on record. |
I lived in San Diego for 3 years and never got any warnings. But that was 20 years ago. Have CA tsunamis ramped up since then? |
I just warned my kid in Oakland just in case. |
They didn’t show up on phones. They existed but usually passed without people even knowing. |
Telling OP it’s likely no big deal is insane. Her kid likely knows nothing about tsunamis. She needs to tell her kid to follow what local authorities are saying, That I agree with. Taking this specific scenario seriously is not “scare mongering”. It’s being prudent. |
It is absolutely scaremongering to reference the Texas flash floods when discussing a Santa Barbara tsunami advisory. You are very, very out of line here. The specific geographies really matter here. Hawaii is at a likely serious risk, some of Northern California/Oregon possibly as well. Santa Barbara, thus far, is just under advisory. This is very different than a warning. You need to back down. - Coastal Californian |
The estimated time of arrival is after midnight when many will be asleep. The advisory should not be ignored by those in coastal areas because some rando PP said “ I’ve seen a lot of warnings in my life and most are canceled or not a big deal.” This could become a warning after locals go to sleep. Important factors for this particular scenarios are that 1- this is the most powerful earthquake in decades and 2- it cause a shift of the ocean floor- which causes tsunamis. |
UPGRADE: A tsunami WARNING has now been issued between Cape Mendocino and the Oregon border in Northern California. Latest modeling suggests a 3-5 foot rise in water levels. Elsewhere along West Coast, generally 1-3 feet. |
If the advisory switches to warning level IN SANTA BARBARA, the very, very loud tsunami sirens and emergency phone alerts will be far more effective than your useless scaremongering on DCUM. Have you ever actually lived through a coastal California tsunami warning? Heard a tsunami siren in real life? It seems obvious you have not. You are very out of line here. It is utterly bizarre that you think your pronouncements on DCUM are more important than what local authorities are saying. |
Do you know how far Cape Mendocino — the southernmost warning level in California currently — is from Santa Barbara? Obviously people need to pay attention to their local conditions but for context, SB is about a ten hour drive to Cape Mendocino. As of now, Santa Barbara remains under advisory level. If that changes, there will be tsunami sirens going off right and left, as well as lots of phone alerts. |
Literally everyone is saying follow the local authorities NOT what people on DCUM are saying. |
