Is there an ETA? I don’t presume to understand how tsunami’s work, but I’m curious how it works.

Californian here. I have gotten alerts too. You can see the estimated times in this article. However, I’ve seen a lot of warnings in my life and most are canceled or not a big deal.

https://ktla.com/news/local-news/california-under-tsunami-watch-after-8-7m-quake-in-eastern-russia/amp/

We will see what happens when the surge hits Hawaii.

Yes as Californians we do get our fair share of tsunami warnings & usually nothing serious occurs.

I personally wouldn’t worry too much about it > this likely will pass.

This one should be taken seriously. It stemmed from a 8.8 earthquake. I can’t believe you would advise not to take a warning seriously after the flash flood warnings and resulting deaths in TX. That attitude is reckless.

I’m not PP but you need to not scaremonger. Santa Barbara is only under an advisory, not a warning, and these are very different.

https://www.countyofsb.org/4725/Tsunami-Advisory-Issued-for-Santa-Barbar

Obviously OPs kid should heed any advice given by local officials, and I do think this has the potential for serious damage in some areas, but right now, Santa Barbara is not likely to be one of those places.

It’s irresponsible to scaremonger as well as to ignore warnings.

Telling OP it’s likely no big deal is insane. Her kid likely knows nothing about tsunamis. She needs to tell her kid to follow what local authorities are saying, That I agree with. Taking this specific scenario seriously is not “scare mongering”. It’s being prudent.

It is absolutely scaremongering to reference the Texas flash floods when discussing a Santa Barbara tsunami advisory. You are very, very out of line here. The specific geographies really matter here. Hawaii is at a likely serious risk, some of Northern California/Oregon possibly as well. Santa Barbara, thus far, is just under advisory. This is very different than a warning. You need to back down.

- Coastal Californian

UPGRADE: A tsunami WARNING has now been issued between Cape Mendocino and the Oregon border in Northern California.

Latest modeling suggests a 3-5 foot rise in water levels. Elsewhere along West Coast, generally 1-3 feet.

Do you know how far Cape Mendocino — the southernmost warning level in California currently — is from Santa Barbara?

Obviously people need to pay attention to their local conditions but for context, SB is about a ten hour drive to Cape Mendocino.

As of now, Santa Barbara remains under advisory level. If that changes, there will be tsunami sirens going off right and left, as well as lots of phone alerts.

No one is saying SB and CM are remotely close. An updated warning was posted. This thread does not only pertain to one town.

The estimated time of arrival is after midnight when many will be asleep. The advisory should not be ignored by those in coastal areas because some rando PP said “ I’ve seen a lot of warnings in my life and most are canceled or not a big deal.” This could become a warning after locals go to sleep. Important factors for this particular scenarios are that 1- this is the most powerful earthquake in decades and 2- it cause a shift of the ocean floor- which causes tsunamis.

If the advisory switches to warning level IN SANTA BARBARA, the very, very loud tsunami sirens and emergency phone alerts will be far more effective than your useless scaremongering on DCUM.

Have you ever actually lived through a coastal California tsunami warning? Heard a tsunami siren in real life? It seems obvious you have not. You are very out of line here. It is utterly bizarre that you think your pronouncements on DCUM are more important than what local authorities are saying.

Literally everyone is saying follow the local authorities NOT what people on DCUM are saying.

Then the fear-mongering poster self-importantly referencing the Texas floods while not understanding the first thing about how California tsunami warnings work should probably stop trying to uselessly scare people like OP, who specifically asked about Santa Barbara. That poster is gross, a tragedy vampire.

Is anyone an insomniac and watching the weather channel? The mayor who was just on is the most reassuring public official I’ve heard in a long time. He’s talking like a stern but beloved HS principal or uncle- it’s just the right tone.

It is really important to listen to local authorities. The Midway waves were apparently bigger than predicted. It does not look good for the Hawaiian islands.

OP, so far Santa Barbara is only advisory. Don’t let the ghoulish PP referencing the Texas floods get to you, but do tell your kid to watch local alerts very closely, to absolutely not go to “watch the tsunami” under any circumstances, and if your kid lives in a flood zone, to consider moving to higher ground after monitoring what happens in Hawaii.

I also live in an advisory area, although not on a flood plain, and this is what I am doing.

Ugh I still remember all the news coverage of the 2004 Tsunami. I’ve never lived on the West Coast/Hawaii so was completely ignorant to what a Tsunami was. Just horrible. Praying that there is minimal impact as it moves across the Pacific.

I have to agree with this sentiment right here.

How dare someone bring up the tragic floods that permeated Texas in the same breath as a CA Tsunami “warning.” 😱
Seriously…..??
It should be criminal to actually do this…..

For the person whose son is in SB. This is the official CA Tsunami map thay was updated a couple of years ago.
https://www.conservation.ca.gov/cgs/tsunami/maps/santa-barbara

Most of SB is quite safe. Just low lying coastal areas right on the beach. Like most of UCSB is fine because it is up higher on cliff. But lagoon area/ slough/ SB airport area is at some risk.

Last time we had a tsunami it caused millions and millions of dollars in property damage in harbors and docks and boats.
