Californian here. I have gotten alerts too. You can see the estimated times in this article. However, I’ve seen a lot of warnings in my life and most are canceled or not a big deal.

This one should be taken seriously. It stemmed from a 8.8 earthquake. I can’t believe you would advise not to take a warning seriously after the flash flood warnings and resulting deaths in TX. That attitude is reckless. [/quote]

I’m not PP but you need to not scaremonger. Santa Barbara is only under an advisory, not a warning, and these are very different.

Obviously OPs kid should heed any advice given by local officials, and I do think this has the potential for serious damage in some areas, but right now, Santa Barbara is not likely to be one of those places.

Telling OP it’s likely no big deal is insane. Her kid likely knows nothing about tsunamis.  She needs to tell her kid to follow what local authorities are saying, That I agree with. Taking this specific scenario seriously is not “scare mongering”. It’s being prudent. [/quote]

It is absolutely scaremongering to reference the Texas flash floods when discussing a Santa Barbara tsunami [i]advisory[/i]. You are very, very out of line here. The specific geographies really matter here. Hawaii is at a likely serious risk, some of Northern California/Oregon possibly as well. Santa Barbara, thus far, is just under advisory. This is very different than a warning. You need to back down.
