Newborn doesn't do anything

He breastfed on a regular schedule and was gaining weight normally, but he was so sleepy that I took him to the ped twice to make sure he was okay. He gradually outgrew the sleepiness after the first couple of months and he's now a very healthy and active teenager. However, he has always needed more sleep than his brothers, especially during growth spurts.

I'd like to add that I remember going online and asking about extra-sleepy babies, and unlike this group, people were very supportive and let me know that some newborns do sleep excessive amounts. (I really miss that parents' group, but sadly it's no longer around.) Every baby is different and as long as he's eating well, the sleeping is not a problem. Just remember that your next child, should you have one, may likely keep you on your toes.

Who told you his sleep is more than average?

I read it. Max is 18.

Where did you read it? 18 is probably on the low end of normal. If you're concerned ask the pediatrician. But if he's gaining weight, and you're changing diapers 10-12 times a day, then he's probably fine.

Google. Some sites different but it’s usually 14-17 or 14-18 hours in a 24 hour period.

Sometimes. I usually have to wake him by changing him before feeding him on the other side because he falls asleep. He eats 10-12 times a day. Though he has been cluster feeding so it seems like he is pretty much attached to the breast from 6pm-2am. He eats anywhere from 20-60 minutes. Most feeding times are about 30 minutes.

If he’s awake for 12 30 minute feedings, then he isn’t sleeping more than 18 hours. This sounds like a sleepy baby, but within the range of normal.

He's so lazy! Better get him to start memorizing the alphabet or at least play French lessons while he's sleeping

Hon, it sounds fine. You can ask your pediatrician at your next appointment if you’re still worried.

My 2nd was like that and I was convinced she was in some sort of light coma or something. She slept constantly! It took her a few months to "wake up" and she was on the later side of normal with a few of her milestones, but she is a totally normal, delightful and healthy and smart 7 year old now. Still a very deep
Sleeper though!

You should definitely consult a pediatrician, not us. But I tracked my breastfeeding religiously with an app, and my recollection from that age is it was like seven hours a day. And I do recall that it took up a lot of our awake time. We did eat-awake-sleep, which I really liked. I think it helped with keeping the baby awake for a whole feed although I for sure still had to change between boobs for a while.

So that’s 6 hours of awake time right there with feeding.

He's not mowing the lawn yet? Absolutely send him back

It’s fine as long as he’s growing! Try and get as much rest as possible at this stage - my babies generally “woke up” around 4 weeks and it got a lot harder.

This is also a nice time (week 3 with a sleepy baby) to get out a bit if you’re up to it. My babies started to need to be rocked to sleep at 4 weeks and would wake if I stopped the stroller, etc. He’s super portable right now, take advantage! Brunch with friends, wander in a museum, stuff like that. Could (and probably will) change any minute.

He's a nerd and no one will like him.

PP to add - when they say 45 -75 mins of awake time that is including eating. And 75 mins is way, way too long for a three week old. For a three week old I’d say 40-50 mins. So eating for 30 mins, 5 mins for diaper change, 5 mins awake is super super normal.

+1 Enjoy it, OP.
