Newborn doesn't do anything

My son is 3 weeks old and still does nothing but eat and sleep. His sleep is far more than the average. How normal is this? If it's not, what steps do I take to correct it?

I’m thinking you may be a troll but just in case you aren’t, it is quite normal for a three week old newborn to not do anything but eat and sleep. How many hours a day is your baby getting of sleep? How much are they eating? How many wet and dirty diapers?

That's normal for a newborn, they're awake maybe 2-3 hours a day.

Who told you his sleep is more than average?

Is he peeing a lot and gaining weight? Excessive sleepiness can be a sign that a baby isn’t transitioning milk well and is dehydrated.

This a rwla post. Everything I've been reading said he should be up for 45-75 minutes. He is awake for max of 5 minutes after eating and that's it. He is sleeping up to 22 hours a day. I've read 14-18 hours is more appropriate. He's eating 10-12 imws a day. Plenty of wet and dirty diapers.

As long as the baby is gaining weight.

He regained birth weight. We haven't had his next weight check yet. He is peeing plenty.

Well if he’s not reading by now he’s clearly never going to get into an Ivy League

I read it. Max is 18.

Presumably your baby is awake while they are eating. That is most of the awake time of a newborn infant. How many times a day is your baby eating and how long does it take each time?

Where did you read it? 18 is probably on the low end of normal. If you're concerned ask the pediatrician. But if he's gaining weight, and you're changing diapers 10-12 times a day, then he's probably fine.

My first two babies (full-term twins) were very active and spent a lot of time interacting from the beginning. Then came baby #3 who slept 23.5 hours a day for the first two months. He breastfed on a regular schedule and was gaining weight normally, but he was so sleepy that I took him to the ped twice to make sure he was okay. He gradually outgrew the sleepiness after the first couple of months and he's now a very healthy and active teenager. However, he has always needed more sleep than his brothers, especially during growth spurts.

Sometimes. I usually have to wake him by changing him before feeding him on the other side because he falls asleep. He eats 10-12 times a day. Though he has been cluster feeding so it seems like he is pretty much attached to the breast from 6pm-2am. He eats anywhere from 20-60 minutes. Most feeding times are about 30 minutes.
