Senior Walk

I've had FCPS graduates in 2014, 2018, and 2022 and none of them did this.

I teach in an elementary school where I’ve been for about 7 years. There are a ton of teachers who have been there for 10, 15, 20 years +. We have a lot of seniors come, the high school brings them in buses (they offer buses to all the pyramid schools), we had 2 buses full. Though the students love cheering for the seniors, the students really seem to enjoy seeing former teachers too. Lots of photos, senior parents come, etc. I was excited to have a senior of my own last year and again this year. My first group of seniors as a teacher is next year and I’m looking forward to that too. It’s a great tradition.

You should reach out to your principals and start it.

It is the best school tradition in our pyramid.

The day the seniors receive their caps and gowns, they go to their old middle and elememtwry schools and parade through the halls while the younger kids applaud them and teachers come out to hug former students. Then the grads pose for pictures in front of their elementary schools.

It is one of the best traditions in FCPS.

Our school has a lot of military kids who might not have gone to elementary or middle school in FCPS. The school hosts something for them, but a lot of them choose to go with their friends back to the elementary schools since it is so much fun.
A tradition since when? My oldest children graduated in 2014 and 2016 from a FCHS and there was nothing formal. A few kids (maybe a dozen) went right when ESschool ended, but it was not a formal thing.

Years. Decades.

Perhaps as far back as when the school was built in the 1960s.

The seniors get their caps and gowns, put them on, and all drive to the elementary and middle schools.

Parents who are at home go and take pictures.

Are you sure your school doesn't do this?

Our school community is very tight knit.

Which school did your kids go to? Ours graduated in similar years from FCPS and they all did it.

I had a class of 2020 grad, and the kids even tried to do a modified version of this tradition during covid, with many of them showing up at the elementary school playgrounds in their cap and gowns at a set time to take pictures together.

If your school doesn't do it, try starting it.

Same.

I am really curious which school this person's kids went to.

This tradition predates social media, fyi.

i doubt there is anything to look up to in these kids today. much less the parents.

This isn't so much about seeing their old teachers as it is about just going back to their old school and seeing how tiny it looks and feels compared to high school. It makes them feel really grown up and it gets the little kids really excited about the future - my ES are so excited every year when the seniors come back, they're always like "will we get to do that when we're seniors??"

No, another FCPS high school.

Sounds school specific, not county-wide.

The PE teacher and Art Teacher is that common?
I know they had very toxic principal so that could be one of the reasons.....

only a few of her teachers "retired". We noticed most of them transfer schools.

I teach 6th and cannot wait to see the seniors! It is one of my favorite days of the year!

I started teaching in '93 and the ES I work in has done this every year.

Maybe the seniors can teach the elementary kids how to vape in the bathroom & where to hide your phone so that the teacher can't see it?

That was tongue in cheek, but aren't there security concerns in 2025?
