Where have you been, it always follows Easter.

When was Easter and spring break last year?

A few years ago the survey gave the option of spring break connected to Easter or to emancipation day and parents picked emancipation day. Which sometimes also coincided with Easter but didn’t always.

Now they are claiming that parents wanted the breaks to align with MoCo.

This is nuts. Did they really say this? Where’s the feedback on that?

More likely: teachers who live in PG/MoCo complained about not being aligned

How did DCPS create the SY 26-29 Calendars?

We want to thank the over 1,800 members of our community who shared feedback in the Fall 2024 survey. This feedback was critical in the finalization of these calendars. For example:

Community members shared a clear preference for aligning DCPS’ Spring Break with the anticipated Spring Breaks in neighboring Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. This change is now reflected in the calendars.
Community members confirmed support for an extended two-week Winter Break beginning in late December and stretching into early January.
Community members continued to share a preference for ending school before the Juneteenth holiday and scheduling parent-teacher conferences in the middle of the grading period/term.
Consistent with feedback on past calendar surveys, caregivers continued to share that multiple partial weeks can be challenging for managing childcare. Whenever possible, we combined days off (i.e., holidays, professional development days, conference days) to minimize the number of partial weeks.
In order to make these changes, the upcoming school year calendars now have school starting two Mondays before Labor Day.

No, I think these are parents who want their DCPS and Charter or Private siblings to have the same break. At our school there are a number of kids who are in DCPS ES but Latin for MS and now the break will align.

Charters and privates should follow DCPS, not the other way around.

Maybe... But I have one in DCPS now and one in a charter middle, and I vastly prefer the charter schedule (more full weeks off, fewer 3 and 4 day weekends).

Same.

It never follows Easter. It has followed Emancipation Day which is mid April. In 2025 those overlap and will again in 2028.

Personally I prefer the April not over Easter break but alas.

I know it’s hard to believe but at some point it followed Easter, then it followed Emancipation Day, now it seems to be back to Easter.

It really doesn't make sense for high schools to have to hang around for so long after AP exams, but that's true with or without these extra two days, which don't move the needle at all. Would be totally fine shifting the year back for everyone, or having separate calendars for high school.

There must be inflated responses with the same people from Maryland going through the survey many times over. There is no way most people picked that stupid formula for spring break. Although I picked Emancipation Day week, every option besides the Maryland NoVA spring breaks are better! Spring break should be secular at the same time every year! That's one thing DC has gotten right since 2017. This moving the break based on Easter is ridiculous and dumb unless you are a Private Christian school. Even then the Catholic and other Christian schools usually do by the week AFTER Easter not before. This is also a guess based on past practices as NOBODY has released their 26-27 calendar let alone
27-28/28-29.

The last time SB was around Easter instead Emancipation Day was 2016 https://dcps.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/dcps/publication/attachments/DCPS%20Calendar%20School%20Year%202015-2016%20Large%20Version_0.pdf
Since 2017 it has aligned with Emancipation Day

There are a significant number of teachers in DC who have kids in Maryland schools and vice versa. Regardless of when it is, I really wish they liked spring break through the region as well as charter/DCPS

It still shouldn't be based on Easter. As you know Easter hops around from year to year. With Emancipation Day the break has been April 11-15 at the earliest and April 17-21 at the latest. Maryland schools should change their spring break schedule instead.

I’m wondering how they are going to find enough subs for those days….
