Where have you been, it always follows Easter.

When was Easter and spring break last year?

A few years ago the survey gave the option of spring break connected to Easter or to emancipation day and parents picked emancipation day. Which sometimes also coincided with Easter but didn’t always.

Now they are claiming that parents wanted the breaks to align with MoCo.

This is nuts. Did they really say this? Where’s the feedback on that?

More likely: teachers who live in PG/MoCo complained about not being aligned

How did DCPS create the SY 26-29 Calendars?

We want to thank the over 1,800 members of our community who shared feedback in the Fall 2024 survey. This feedback was critical in the finalization of these calendars. For example:

Community members shared a clear preference for aligning DCPS’ Spring Break with the anticipated Spring Breaks in neighboring Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. This change is now reflected in the calendars.

There must be inflated responses with the same people from Maryland going through the survey many times over. There is no way most people picked that stupid formula for spring break. Although I picked Emancipation Day week, every option besides the Maryland NoVA spring breaks are better! Spring break should be secular at the same time every year! That's one thing DC has gotten right since 2017. This moving the break based on Easter is ridiculous and dumb unless you are a Private Christian school. Even then the Catholic and other Christian schools usually do by the week AFTER Easter not before. This is also a guess based on past practices as NOBODY has released their 26-27 calendar let alone
27-28/28-29.

There are a significant number of teachers in DC who have kids in Maryland schools and vice versa. Regardless of when it is, I really wish they liked spring break through the region as well as charter/DCPS
It still shouldn't be based on Easter. As you know Easter hops around from year to year. With Emancipation Day the break has been April 11-15 at the earliest and April 17-21 at the latest. Maryland schools should change their spring break schedule instead.

Having the third week of April off is pretty common in school districts all across the country, isn't it? I guess I'm just used to that timing, so when I hear DC is "aligning it with Emancipation Day," I don't think much of it since I'm just used to having it then anyway. Having it track with Easter makes no sense, since it moves around way too much.

I welcome an earlier spring break. April is such a nice month in DC that I don't feel the need to get away. Plus, all area schools should just be on the same schedule. Easier for teachers, easier for families with kids in a private and one in public. I don't get why this is a big deal.

Also, who cares about the last day of school. Don't send your kid if you don't want to.

When the last day of school is in June it's common to have the break in April. If the last day is late June the break will probably be in the 3rd or 4th week of April and may even have a week off in February. If the last day is in early to mid June the break will probably be in the 1st or 2nd week of April. In DC it's split in the middle between the 2nd and 3rd full week with the break mid range this year as Emancipation Day is on a Wednesday. Having a March spring break is common in places that end in May but it makes no sense for a mid-June end to have spring break that soon.
