Cheating in high school

So much cheating at DS’s US too, also noticed increase since Covid. No honor code. The non-cheating students and teachers are frustrated by the lack of support from administration. Blatant sophisticated group cheating with multiple reports and no follow through or repercussions from administrators. Seems like cheating is blatant in college too, so maybe this is a way to prep them for their future “success.”

I’m bummed to hear it continues in college. My DS tells me he is seeing a lot of it this year (junior).

It is far, far worse in college.

College needs to rethink having general requirements, which forces kids to take classes in subjects where they have no interest. Oxford/Cambridge are fine with no general requirements and kids earning their degree in 3 years.

Also, colleges care about kids using AI in high school because they are also academic institutions. Therefore, getting caught cheating in HS may cut-off your route to certain colleges. Doesn't mean it isn't happening in HS, but the negative consequences feel more direct.

The real world is actively encouraging everyone to use AI. They will now look to hire college grads with the best AI skills. The real world only cares about results and getting those results as quickly and cheaply as possible.

I guess it's also hard to say it's cheating in college because some professors expect their students to actively use it while others may try to be strict about it. The ones that actively use it will try to accomplish 2x-3x more in their classes vs. pre-AI days, so it's incorporating both AI and original thought into their class.

I’m sure the AI stuff is rampant but my kid is bothered by the kids who take pictures of tests to share with other kids taking the tests later.

It's going to get a ton worse in as little as 12 months.

Several companies have received VC funding to load AI onto IT-enabled glasses (prescription lenses if you want).

It will allow someone to read and answer questions with answers generated by AI in real-time. The AI is reading the questions the same time as the human.

While of course the companies receiving funding think it's "abhorrent" to use these devices for cheating...they on the side admit that their #1 market will be HS and college students using it for...cheating.

It will allow someone to cheat on the SAT in real-time or if you have to write an in-class essay, it will give you the essay to write in real-time or of course give you the answers to any test in real-time.

You also can't see any text or anything if you are looking at the glasses from the other side...and the text will immediately disappear if the glasses are taken off.

Humanity is screwed. There will cease to be a value in knowing information. The value will be in knowing how to access and use the information. Also in plumbing. If you can unclog a toilet or a sink, you’ll have a job.

Unfortunately, there is a bunch of cheating at NCS. My DD regularly reports it to teachers and has rarely seen it addressed. Even with the honor code and .policies, there are typically few repercussions

The easy solution to this is

- no cell phones in classes - no pictures of tests, not pre-written notes to access etc.

- blue book tests for everything as a baseline. Teachers can see the writing styles of their students and have a basis of comparison for papers submitted later in the semester.

I’m on board with this but I bet there are teachers using AI to grade tests who may not like it. Did anyone see the NYT article today about college profs using AI to grade?

Sorry but if kids are cheating in your class using AI you are a lazy teacher. Why do they even have access to AI during tests?

I don’t know about lazy, some of the old school ones may be just unaware. My kid’s best teacher is an older guy who my kid thinks doesn’t get what’s going on. My kid appreciates that this is the best teacher he has ever had but is frustrated that his classmates take advantage. It’s a tough lesson for him but not every person is honorable.

My 9th grader says there is rampant cheating in his Catholic HS. Surprising and makes me sad. He never knew or saw anyone cheat in his DC charter MS so I was certainly not expecting it in Catholic HS!

Teachers use AI to write tests, create curriculum, give feedback on essays and homework.

Teachers feel overwhelmed so they’re looking for short cuts too. And they won’t confront cheating students because who would want to deal with their parents? So they look the other way.

Kids are getting AP tests apparently in advance.

Really how? Do the examiners secretly give it before?

The cheating in Sidwell’s Chemistry 1A class (current sophomores) has been terrible this year!

My DC has told me about so much cheating in the 10th grade Sidwell class. It's kind of hysterical and the administration seems so frazzled and have no idea what to do about it. I just tell DC to just not cheat and at the end of the day your brain is growing more. So many kids have not gotten caught. And FYI, they have empty threats to do anything about it.
