He is on probation for a weapons violation.

There are no shots fired so far but police believe the suspect is armed. He has a criminal history including illegal possession of arms.

Per the latest update - suspect is currently in the Lewis Mtn neighborhood. I appreciate UVA's prompt communication and abundance of caution. Parents should join UVA's emergency alert to receive real time text updates - info was shared at parent orientation. Students know the situation and don't seem to be afraid. There was a massive Snarty (a snow day, day party) when classes were cancelled 2 weeks ago, and this morning a student posted "Sharty (a shelter in place Darty)?"
