Never say never but this is not going to happen. The money is not there. Not even for half of that. And never will be. MLS is driven by Latino support and beer sales. Sorry but true. Neither will ever happen on the women's side. Also the boys side is full of kids from across the economic levels but has a lot of LMC or LC Latino kids who can look at soccer as being a great way to make it in the world. The girl's side is almost exclusively UC, UMC, and to a lesser extend MC. They are less likely to view pro soccer as the way to riches. A 400k job for five years is not worth it when they can get to 400k on their own for a lifetime through college as doctors, lawyers, and such. They know they can do this as that is what their parents have done. ON DD's ECNL team a few years back there were 5 biglaw partners as a parent; 3 doctors; 2 CEOs of medium size companies. That is 10 of the slots. College is still king. PP says colleges pulling back from non-revenue sports. True to a very limited degree but women's soccer is not where they are pulling back. There is also and there cannot be a USL type women's program. Just no way there is enough money. Playing pro soccer for girls in the US is just not a good idea unless you are one of maybe 40 girls a year who are the top AND you are conventionally pretty or edgy in a way that is popular for marketing. Otherwise much better off to go to college if you are smart enough. Otherwise you will end up as a soccer coach. |
Well, we definitely need more women's soccer coaches (and if it pays well enough, what's wrong with that?) |
On what planet does it pay well? Not here. And no the last thing we need is more soccer coaches. |
And how many of these girls really would go back to being a college freshman on campus at 28 years old? |
Yes this is stupid. |
Somebody certainly is making a ton of money on youth soccer. Women who start out as coaches, mentors could then stay in the biz like men do and the more business savvy may eventually rise and make $$$. Also, again, if it's enough to pay the bills and be happy, we should all be so lucky. |
They actually would probably do better, being older and knowing more what they want to do in life, sorta like when vets go to school after their service. People lead all sorts of lives. Let them! |
It's the administration. Have you ever seen the (posted) salaries of the "non-profit" Loudoun staff (non-coaches)? |

A good comparison is Jeremy Lin. He played basketball at Harvard and tried the NBA before otherwise going to medical school. In our area that is the same as a lot of the girls --- that is why they tend to go to the better academic schools. Why did he try the NBA? Because one year off before med school was not a big deal and he made 600k at first. Had he flamed out it was worth it and he was onto med school. But he blew up. His NBA comp for his time in the NBA was 45 million and he is estimated to have a similar numbers from advertising. No med school. But that all made sense.
That is not the deal for Women's soccer. Also a personal note. I played football at a now P4 college. It was one of the higher academic ones. Now a biglaw partner. I was not drafted although my agent thought I could be a late round pick. I was signed to a team as a free agent. I made the practice squad and I said I will give it a year. I only made 60k that year. The next year I went into camp and only made practice squad again. I did not sign and went straight to law school. Not worth doing that again for me. But like Lin I already had my degree. |
No not many are making a lot of money on soccer. And just paying the bills should not be the goal. |
But they will not. People do not go back. |
Many do. I guess they are just invisible to you. Maybe you miss them because they go to smaller OR more commuter-type programs instead because they also may have a family at that point. |
When you start out it certainly is. Nothing wrong with making more, of course, but you could really say bad things about any industry/career. |
All the data is that they do not. Only about 15% of people that start at communcity college finish. |
Look -- being a soccer coach is not a noble job. Most have some soccer skills but half a brain at best. And the money is not a lot and you are at super peril from not getting enough work. It is not a job anyone should aspire to. It is in fact what happens when you are good at soccer but not bright enough for the rest of the world. |
