What kept everything back was the influence of college (specifically womens) soccer.

Until recently going pro in women's soccer was as difficult as getting on a national team. But the pay was ridiculous and nobody cared. At least with the national team there were endorsement opportunities.

So players quickly realized that the best option was to play in college. Now colleges are slowly pulling back on non revenue sports and pro teams are slowly starting to pay players more. This makes the pro pathway more and more viable.

The girl dad's need to look at what's happening with MLSN + pro/college recruiting because this is where the women's game is headed. As an example once Acadamies are established on the women's side this is where both pro teams and college recruiters will look for talent. Not at showcase events (as much as they do now)[/quote]

Never say never but this is not going to happen.  The money is not there.  Not even for half of that.  And never will be.  MLS is driven by Latino support and beer sales.  Sorry but true.  Neither will ever happen on the women's side.  Also the boys side is full of kids from across the economic levels but has a lot of LMC or LC Latino kids who can look at soccer as being a great way to make it in the world.  The girl's side is almost exclusively UC, UMC, and to a lesser extend MC.  They are less likely to view pro soccer as the way to riches.  A 400k job for five years is not worth it when they can get to 400k on their own for a lifetime through college as doctors, lawyers, and such.  They know they can do this as that is what their parents have done.  ON DD's ECNL team a few years back there were 5 biglaw partners as a parent; 3 doctors; 2 CEOs of medium size companies.  That is 10 of the slots.

College is still king.  PP says colleges pulling back from non-revenue sports.  True to a very limited degree but women's soccer is not where they are pulling back.  There is also and there cannot be a USL type women's program.  Just no way there is enough money.

Playing pro soccer for girls in the US is just not a good idea unless you are one of maybe 40 girls a year who are the top AND you are conventionally pretty or edgy in a way that is popular for marketing.  Otherwise much better off to go to college if you are smart enough.  Otherwise you will end up as a soccer coach.[/quote]

Somebody certainly is making a ton of money on youth soccer. Women who start out as coaches, mentors could then stay in the biz like men do and the more business savvy may eventually rise and make $$$. Also, again, if it's enough to pay the bills and be happy, we should all be so lucky.[/quote]

It's the administration.  Have you ever seen the (posted) salaries of the "non-profit" Loudoun staff (non-coaches)?[/quote]
