I'm hearing of a lot of acceptances with much lower stats.

1490 SAT
4.2 WGPA
11 APs (4s and 5s) including Physics and Physics C, Calculus AB, Computer Science Principles and 1, plus core classes starting in 9th.

Was also deferred EA at UVA. I'm shocked.

That is incredibly shocking! Engineering is so competitive now. Your student sounds stellar ❤️

Why? The WGPA is low

Actually, no. In addition to the many AP courses in math and sciences, he also took multiple art classes, culinary, and two years of technical drawing, all of which were unweighted.

Are APs weighted to 5 or 4.5?

APs are weighted 5. However, math is not weighted until AP level. His unweighed GPA was 3.7/8 and he was in the top 10% of his class.

You’re obviously not talking to kids from my kid’s school then. It’s a sea of waitlists.

NP. Just because there may be a lot of acceptances with much lower stats does not mean there aren't waitlists and deferrals with much higher stats.

(There's a name for that. Supposedly VT doesn't do that thing, but some aspect of their algorithm does, in fact, do that.)

This means their kid goes to Whitman, Walter-Johnson or Wootton in MCPS.

3.7 GPA, 1440 SAT, 11 APs (all 4s and 5s so far)
Main essay was fantastic but I dont think they read those.

Probably will go elsewhere - in at higher ranked businesss schools but may accept waitlist and see what happens- would love to get in state tuition one of these days! All my kids attend OOS
