W&M Target or Reach?

I think reach. It's harder to get in OOS.

Is naviance reliable for this? It lists W&M as a safety for my DC, and I didn’t think it could be a safety for anyone

I wouldn't focus on the labels. Look at the scattergrams from students who applied from your school.

For our school, the scattergram only shows acceptances and DC is above and to the right of those. Still, I don’t think it is a safety.

Target. Especially since she demonstrated interest. W&M admits students who want to go, and she looks like a good fit to me.

Good but not competitive scores (1350 SAT) due to diagnosed learning disabilities. Intellect and comprehension are high but processing speed is low. Scores don’t match grades so she chose TO. Hopefully submitting AP scores will help a bit.

Come on. How did she get 4s and 5s on the AP tests but a 1350 on the SAT? Slow processing would also apply to the AP tests. Perhaps she didn’t study enough for the SAT. I say this as a parent of 3 ADHD kids.

SATs and APs do not measure the same things and rely on different skills. My DS did very well on APs as a demonstration of subject knowledge and comprehension versus SATs as a demonstration of test taking skills. Plus, learning disabilities are not the same thing as ADHD, so your kids' experience isn't as relevant as you think it is.

Re scattergrams: Does target mean someone is on the line of average accepted SAT and GPA?

In state? Target. OOS and TO with only 8 APs (yes, I know, but instate kids with 10+ great grades and tests scores are being rejected). Not a target. Maybe a little better than a reach though.

WM likes good test scores. And they really, really like demonstrated interest. Did she tour, interview and do the “optional essay” (which is definitely not optional)? If so, it pushes her closer to target.

How do scattergrams help if a kid is TO?

My kid was similar (and ironically, is going to W&M for grad school 👍)

Reach for OOS coming from your area.

Our school allows you to filter for TO.

Yes she toured, interviewed, did both optional essays, met with the arts faculty, and was nominated for a scholarship.

I think hard target/low reach and I think she has a good chance (70%) of getting in due to demonstrated interest.

My 2024 from UMD kid got into Maryland honors, +merit and got into W&M OOS- W&M was originally his top choice but when he looked at the cost difference and the honors dorm at UMD he decided UMD was just fine.
