I mean, is it crazy to have bought a house based on employment? People make choices based on the most likely future scenario. You have no idea why her kids are in private |
True, but in reality, unless you have 12Month+ emergency fund, fully funded for life as you currently know it, you shouldn't be doing private school in most cases. Because job loss is a thing, and I personally woudlnt' want to have to yank my kids out of school and move them elsewhere mid year, unless it involved an actual physical move for work. So I wouldn't put mine into private until I could withstand getting thru the year no matter what. I also wouldn't do private until I could also be well set for college, because attending college is more important to me than attending private K-12. |
Actually, yes, it is crazy to put yourself hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt (or more) with the hope that you will always be gainfully employed for the next 30 years. This is the blind spot of the “never pay off your mortgage” people—it’s survivorship bias. |
You need a house to live in, and it is presumed to be an appreciating asset. Private school is a luxury. |
crazy to buy one you can’t afford if your income drops. Yes. we are talking WEALTHY people who have managed to over shoot their load. We aren’t talking about the average middle class american just trying to survive. If you are wealthy enough to afford private school, but can’t afford it with a job loss you have ZERO business putting your kids in private school in the first place. You are playing in a league you don’t belong in. You shouldn’t put your kids in private school if you aren’t smart enough or capable of setting money aside as to not disrupt their lives. |
1000% Unless your kids have some major learning issues and the private schools are to specifically address that, you should not put them in private unless you can afford to keep them there thru a job loss. |
They can go to public school and be locked out of the bathrooms all day and witness (or be the victim of) frequent fights at my local middle school. Some parents pay for private just for basic safety and humane conditions for their kids. |
Private schools have the same problems. You just don't hear about it because they don't have to legally disclose. |
If there were frequent fights and bathrooms were locked all day at my kids' school I would definitely hear about it. You are delusional if you think that my kids' 50k per year school has the same problems as my neighborhood school with a 60% FARMS rate. |
Does OP live in such neighborhood? So, more bad decisions? We have money for private, but 'hell no' were kid's words when I brought it up. I bet OP's kid loves their school as much as mine loves his. Privates are absolutely lovely, but I'm surprised when some of my kid's classmate got in. They were the bottom of the class. Hopefully they will catch up and meet the public school kids in college. |
Lol, yeah public is gonna be great!
Especially after the latest news was that Americans kids fell in reading and math levels to 30 year lows and after Trump dismantles the education department. Good luck with that! PS I moved DC from private to a public magnet and OMG the academic level of kids light years behind. |
Needing to work for a living is "close to the edge," now? Wild. |
Huh?? I guess your kid needed special help.. |
"A living" = food and shelter. It does not and never has equaled "right to private education for your children." |
My kids didn't go private school but had a well rounded experience. 90% of US kids go to public school and have a well rounded experience. |
