UNC out

Kid just got rejected oos - top 1/600, 1500+ Sat, 4.0 uw, great not elite ECs, etc. And it was totally expected because oos UNC is notoriously difficult. My question is...why do oos kids want to go there so fervently? He applied because it is a great school and he didn't know how the rest of the decisions would play out (they are playing out well, so that's why he's not upset). But, to be honest, what drives the oos kids there when the in-state kids do not have the same kind of elite credentials that the oos kids do.

My OOS kid was admitted but turned it down. Not all who apply want that school above others.

Because kids go to schools for more reasons than other kids’ “elite credentials.” In fact, most kids do not think about this much, at least within a certain range of schools.

It’s in the south, which is popular, and North Carolina in particular. It has fun basketball. It has always been sort of the number 5 public after Cal, UCLA, UVA, and Michigan. OOS is pretty cheap compared to privates (or even some other OOS). Better weather than up north most of the school year. Common app arms race drives kids to apply all over. Probably a dozen other reasons.

Why did my OOS kid apply? It seemed a lot like UVA, but a chance to do something different. My DC did not have their heart set on it, so they weren't upset at the rejection. Some people have family ties to UNC and those seem pretty strong for the kids.

PP, because it's not too far away. It's ranked well. It doesn't cost too much. It doesn't feel quite as southern as other flagships.

It's a great school with a lot of spirit, great sports, beautiful campus and great weather. Ranked in the top publics, good programs, great variety of academic offerings (except engineering). Happy students, good quality of life.

our top private gets 3-5 in every year, and most use it as an ivy/t10 backup if they are open to big schools, or a backup to UCB which is a little harder. UNC OOS is a match for anyone in our top5% with highest rigor. The other truly within range ivy-chasers use WashU, Vanderbilt, Amherst, Williams as their match-range schools for backups. UNC is bigger than UVA and not as academic, weird choice when UVA is a slam dunk for these kids and cheaper in state

They only take OOS who are minority, doesn’t matter what test scores, GPA, etc. Otherwise, don’t waste the application fee.

I haven't found the basketball that fun this year.

My OOS, minority (pretty clear in extracurriculars) 4.0UW/1530 kid was waitlisted.

Not true at all. Two of my DC friends Asian and African American have 1500s SAT, top 10% at big 3, great ECs and essays. Outcome: waitlist. Stop spewing nonsense.

I’m not saying they take all minorities. I’m saying the vast majority of those OOS accepted are minorities. Also, for the purposes of college admissions, East Asians are not minorities.

Please substantiate this claim.

In OOS public school (with little/no precedent) no hooks, TO. Good writer, Strong ECs/honors.

Wrong. UNC has one of the lowest minority enrollment among the top publics.

Seriously? Schools hide this stuff since the SCOTUS devision. We all know it's true but can't substantiate. Didn't you get the letter from your college pledging ongoing commitment to diversity after SCOTUS? I got it from both my SLAC and law school, which. both have continued to play the URM and race game - it's just now in the essay, not in a box
