Not trying to bash UNC. Kid just got rejected oos - top 1/600, 1500+ Sat, 4.0 uw, great not elite ECs, etc. And it was totally expected because oos UNC is notoriously difficult. My question is...why do oos kids want to go there so fervently? He applied because it is a great school and he didn't know how the rest of the decisions would play out (they are playing out well, so that's why he's not upset). But, to be honest, what drives the oos kids there when the in-state kids do not have the same kind of elite credentials that the oos kids do.
Because kids go to schools for more reasons than other kids’ “elite credentials.” In fact, most kids do not think about this much, at least within a certain range of schools. It’s in the south, which is popular, and North Carolina in particular. It has fun basketball. It has always been sort of the number 5 public after Cal, UCLA, UVA, and Michigan. OOS is pretty cheap compared to privates (or even some other OOS). Better weather than up north most of the school year. Common app arms race drives kids to apply all over. Probably a dozen other reasons.
