UNC out

Kid just got rejected oos - top 1/600, 1500+ Sat, 4.0 uw, great not elite ECs, etc. And it was totally expected because oos UNC is notoriously difficult. My question is...why do oos kids want to go there so fervently? He applied because it is a great school and he didn't know how the rest of the decisions would play out (they are playing out well, so that's why he's not upset). But, to be honest, what drives the oos kids there when the in-state kids do not have the same kind of elite credentials that the oos kids do.

Because kids go to schools for more reasons than other kids’ “elite credentials.” In fact, most kids do not think about this much, at least within a certain range of schools.

It’s in the south, which is popular, and North Carolina in particular. It has fun basketball. It has always been sort of the number 5 public after Cal, UCLA, UVA, and Michigan. OOS is pretty cheap compared to privates (or even some other OOS). Better weather than up north most of the school year. Common app arms race drives kids to apply all over. Probably a dozen other reasons.

I haven't found the basketball that fun this year.

NCAA Men's basketball sucks these days.

Law schools are stats driven. If four kids have the same LSAT, GPA, and extracurriculars out of UNC, UT, UF, or UVA, they will more or less have the same law school admissions odds all other things being equal as well.

Thank you. What about a kid with the same stats graduating from UVA vs Yale?

Tiebreaker to Yale, but otherwise the same.

Yale attracts high stats kids who, not surprisingly, do well on the LSAT because they did well on the SAT.

This PP is forgetting that in-state law schools give a preference to in-state applicants. UVA Law (ranked no 4) gives a preference nod to UVA grads and VA residents. William & Mary is the same. Similarly, UNC grads have an easier time getting into UNC law.

There can be residency mandates. There can also be a bias for undergraduate alumni in choosing their alma mater's law school over alternatives. But UVA Law maintains its ranking by maintaining its stats. It isn't making big stat concessions.

Did UNC defer some to Global Scholars again this year?

Sorry should have written Did UNC offer some Global Launch vs fall admission again this year?

Last year we thought my kid was just checking they'd potentially be interested and they got in EA but would have had to go to Scotland first which they declined. The program actually sounded great, it's just for that particular grade they had to start HS during covid and my child just really wanted to start college with the rest of the grade.

Live in NC, and with 80% from instate it is just not seen as a top place where smart kids go, other than the ones who get morehead. we know many top business school grads who struggled to get a job with a starting salary over 75k, and these were phi beta kappa level grads from unc. Unfortunately with Duke nearby the top consulting and other. business related top jobs go to those grads (econ, math, physics majors are snapped up by MBB, jane street, etc) UNC grads either have to take regional jobs or head to SC to get more pay, or go to DC NY or Boston for much less known companies and less pay than the Duke counterparts.

You got any data/ sources to back up the BS you just made up and posted? 1) that smart NC kids prefer Duke, 2) that Carolina grads only get regional or SC job offers bc of Duke being 8 miles away, 3) that Carolina grads who do go to DC/NY/Boston get jobs are lesser known companies for less pay than their Duke counterparts?

Post it. I’d love to read more about it.

That wasn’t my post and I have no clue on any of those claims. Only thing I can somewhat agree with is that top students at the most rigorous high schools in state do feel that way a bit. They pull top kids from all schools all over state as they should, so the sentiment you hear people say about oos kids sticking out is also how the very top at strong magnets and privates feel also. Not all, some, not making a giant claim. Plenty of other top kids just love the school spirit and sports and vibe and would not have same issue.

You know most of the "top kids at the most rigorous high schools in the state"? Every year?

UNC is pulling top kids within its own state just like other very good and super popular flagships in other states (like UT Austin, UVA and UGA) and a lot of it has to do with the fact that those in state kids can get a great education in a fun environment for a great price. I am not sure why people seem to think that NC is full of dumb kids and that top NC kids who pick UNC or heaven forbid NC State aren't smart or top of their class. The same in state percentage can be used for a school like Texas. I don't read the same stuck up attitudes about Texas kids that go there like I do about UNC kids here on DCUM.

Duke is a perfectly fine school and I'd be happy if any of my kids went there. BUT NC kids aren't overwhelmingly picking it or trying to go there and this is supported by their admissions data (usually less than 10% of their incoming freshmen class are in state, this is public info). Duke has started an outreach and scholarship program just for NC kids because they want to actively change that and kudos to them. Duke also is the perfect school for a certain kind of student, and its environment and culture aren't like those at UNC and other in state options. Just like W&M vs UVA (2 great schools, really different in most ways). And that's ok. Grads from neither UNC nor Duke are hurting for job prospects because of the other.

Well I'm sure way more DMV kids apply to UNC than Texas so you're going to hear more about UNC on this website.

The one deterrent for us (OOS) at UNC admitted students day last year was the lack of diversity from those outside NC. Not that there is anything wrong with people from NC, but it feels more insular than some other top publics like UVA or Michigan as the percentage of in-state at UNC is so high. I would imagine UT feels overwhelmingly Texan as well.

That’s fair and accurate, and even my in-state NC felt that, wanted more geographical diversity. Some love it, some want to expand, no right or wrong.

First choice, fell in love with it but also accepted to HYP which was a surprise. Will have to revisit both.

Picking UNC over HYP was a dumb decision by a stubborn teenager that has impacted the rest of my life.

I hope your kid will make a better decision than I did.

Frank Bruni went to UNC over Yale and did quite well for himself.
