Question just for others who avoid soda for metabolism reasons

I usually watch what I eat. But I will be on a long weekend cruise girls trip. Soda is included in the fare. I don't drink though other people on the trip will be drinking.

Would you keep avoiding diet soda? Or make exception for this short weekend trip, such as in lieu of dessert or cocktails?

Do you LIKE soda or are you caving to what you feel will be peer pressure? If cigarettes were included in the fare and your friends will all be smoking, would you smoke just for the trip?

Are you able to abstain from it after having one, or does getting a taste of it start cravings and set you on a path of regular soda?
If you don't drink soda, then don't drink it. If you want it and can control it so it isn't harmful for you metabolically, have one.

I was never a drinker, even in college. Rare glass of wine or even rarer mixed drink. I hate the taste of beer and saw no reason to "acquire a taste for it." I did drink soda and would get a soda instead of beer. Some people may make a comment, but then they quickly move on. It really doesn't matter if I am drinking soda or water - same reactions, same lack of reactions. Not drinking alcohol - or even soda - is not particularly stigmatizing these days. People know it's not good for you.

Why would you start drinking it just because it's paid for? Do you drink it at home when it's on a really good sale at the grocery store?

If you get peer pressure from not drinking, or other activities, the phrase that works like magic to stop it is: ‘You are going to stop drinking soda, before I start.’ Turns it back to their actions…

I wouldn’t drink it just for the peer pressure but I also wouldn’t deprive myself if it’s doing to make me feel bummed out to skip. When on vacation. I try not to deprive myself but also try to be a little mindful of not consuming empty calories. Like if my family wants to go to some crappy fast food place, I’ll just skip that meal and spend my calories on the great hand churned ice cream place we are going to dessert. Or will get the fabulous flash fried clam strips that they are famous for, but skip the beer/sodq/fries that I don’t really care about. I don’t think it will affect your health much if you are “bad” for the week — so my question is really only how much do you want it and will you be sad to skip it. The fact that it’s “free” should not weigh in.

Why poison yourself on purpose?

Oh shut up.

I’m not that poster but no need to be rude to someone who is factually accurate just because you don’t want to hear that you’re drinking unhealthy junk.

No one needs to be told that soda isn't good for you. No one thinks it's a health food. But people consume and do things that aren't strictly good for them all the time -- OP's friends will be drinking alcohol on the cruise and I'm sure they also know alcohol isn't a health food. Yet they enjoy it, and are on vacation.

Stating the obvious and then heaping loads of judgment on top isn't helpful.

Anonymous wrote:"Metabolism" reasons? I avoid it because the acidity is bad for my teeth, and the sugar content is not healthy in the long-term. Since I've been avoiding it for so long, I don't really like to drink soda when I have a taste now, because it feels so strong, for lack of a better word.

But if you like it, sure, a few won't hurt you.

I swear people make up random reason not to consume something.

Don't delude yourself with the sparkling water. How is that better than soda?

True. But some posters on here never grew up. You should see what they spew when you tell them that alcohol is bad for your health!

Yeah, wine is good for the liver

+1. I no longer enjoy the taste of soda, but wouldn't sweat drinking it on vacay if I did.

Less sugar?
Lack of artificial sugars?

Um, it's better because it doesn't have sugar or artificial sweeteners in it.

It's not a "random reason". The PP was correct. Sugar is bad for your metabolic health. Leads to weight gain and insulin resistance.

What are “metabolism reasons?” Are these people going to be pressuring you to drink soda? If so that is bizarre. I don’t drink soda because I don’t really like it, and I have never, ever been pressured by anyone to drink a soda.

Also curious! I'm not a big soda drinker but have never heard this before.

You're going on a cruise, OP. Let yourself enjoy the cruise.

I'm assuming because it doesn't contain artificial sweeteners?
