Mommy is the poster child for Tiger Parent.

Hit me with your recommendations for a school that has a stellar math program and has varsity fencing. He will likely fence but wants to be somewhere near the mountains or ski resorts and outdoor area for rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, paddle boarding. Very outdoorsy kid. Academic, high tester. Hasn't take the PSAT or SAT yet. Seems early but I am having a hard time finding this type of unicorn. Son goes to a huge public school where he is just a number and overlooked since he has strong test scores and academics so the counselor isn't much help.

Not asking for much are you? Dartmouth has it's own Ski Hill and is an hour from Killington. Fencing is a club sport. Colorado School of Mines also has club fencing and of course Golden is a gateway to some of the best skiing in the world.

Golden is a gateway to sitting on I-70 for hours trying to get to the skiing.

He's made great friends and built a good community for himself. He went in undecided but is studying Applied Mathematics and QAMO. We've been very impressed with the support and guidance provided for undergraduates.

Not doing the honors college because it doesn't seem to provide much for the extra costs but he's participating in a program that provides undergraduate research opportunities for credit and the research he's doing is in line with his interests.

And of course the skiing is close and awesome.

So many people have moved to SLC or Park City from the Denver/Boulder area because of its proximity to skiing. Even if you have a CO ski house, driving out to the mountains Friday through Monday is unbearable.

The University of Utah and the job market in Utah are on the up and up, particularly in the tech sector, where math majors are recruited.

Yeah, this is a unicorn. You're going to have to make some choices. I was thinking Dartmouth and Williams. Great Math departments. But neither have men's fencing. That would be Princeton, Notre Dame, and Columbia. Not a lot of great skiing in Indiana or NY city.

Consider the publics out west. UC Boulder, Montana, Idaho.

OP here. My son loves math. He has said he wanted to be a math teacher or work in a math related field since third grade when his third grade teacher made him fall in love with mathematics. My husband is a math professor and I work in a math-related field. My mom and dad are both math teachers at public HS in the midwest. I can see DS being a math teacher.

For fencing, Notre Dame (I am an alum) and he isn't interested since no proximity to skiing. We have a condo in Park City so I could see him going to Utah. I advise a college sorority at JMU, which we suggested to him and there isn't much to do there but it's close to Massanutten, where my sister has a mountain house. DH/dad went to Penn as did grandparents and they have a good fencing program.

We used to live in Montana when he was little so he loves schools there. We are looking at schools in Colorado, which are hard for out of state, but he's pretty academic. Colorado College, University of Denver, University of Colorado, Boulder. Looking at University of Utah, Utah State, Montana, Montana State, Idaho, Idaho State and SMU Taos.

None of them have club fencing or fencing, but they do have skiing.

Suggest Middleburry, Colby, University of Vermont, Montana, Montana State, Colorado, Idaho. Locally, look at JMU or VA Tech (Club Ski team), Penn State, Penn, West Virginia, Appalachian State. Strictly for fencing, Notre Dame, Penn State, Cornell, Columbia, Princeton.

Penn State might be the one with closest to skiing and fencing.

Air Force Academy--not that you would have time for skiing

Might not be a realistic choice.

Penn State has one of the top varsity fencing programs in the country. The team has a long history of success, regularly competing for NCAA titles and producing Olympic-level fencers.

I would look at schools near mountains and see if they have fencing: Colorado, Vermont, Denver, 5Cs.

Right? I mean, Dartmouth and Middlebury come to mind as good schools with skiing nearby that probably have decent math and fencing programs.

Came immediately to mind for me, too.

You need to stop talking about specific schools with your 9th grader. He should focus on grades and extracurriculars and see what kind of school he wants in two years. He's going to change a lot in the next 4 years!
