College rec: math major, close to skiing/outdoor rec

Anonymous
Son is a HS freshman. He plays club and JV lacrosse and soccer and is on club fencing. He wants to major in math and loves skiing and the outdoors. Hit me with your recommendations for a school that has a stellar math program and has varsity fencing. He will likely fence but wants to be somewhere near the mountains or ski resorts and outdoor area for rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, paddle boarding. Very outdoorsy kid. Academic, high tester. Hasn't take the PSAT or SAT yet. Seems early but I am having a hard time finding this type of unicorn. Son goes to a huge public school where he is just a number and overlooked since he has strong test scores and academics so the counselor isn't much help.

No shade on looking ahead.

But tip - you are less than two months into school - what exactly do you think the counselor should have done by now? Please remember that the counselor probably has a HUGE list of Senior college applications to support right now, in addition to Junior students that are closer to needing college support than a freshman.

Right? I mean, Dartmouth and Middlebury come to mind as good schools with skiing nearby that probably have decent math and fencing programs.

I have no idea about fencing. For everything else, look at Lehigh, Middlebury, University of Vermont. Cornell has a decent mountain about 30 minutes away -- I'll bet they have shuttles or a ski club.

JMU has a great Fencing Club, a Skiing/snowboarding Club and a hiking Club. All near the Shenandoah mountains.

They also have a Math program and an Education Program in case he wants to become a teacher with that Math Major.

I love how I’m so reluctantly dealing with this process as the parent of a senior yet this board is filled with people whose kids just left middle school šŸ™ƒ

Not asking for much are you? Dartmouth has it's own Ski Hill and is an hour from Killington. Fencing is a club sport. Colorado School of Mines also has club fencing and of course Golden is a gateway to some of the best skiing in the world.

OP, most good colleges have good math departments somewhat corresponding to their level of overall prestige.

Search up a list of colleges sufficiently close to skiing and then sort by ranking.

Your kid may not even have skiing as a priority in college. Who has time for that? Some of the kids at U Utah, MSU Bozeman, and CU Boulder do, but my CO kid who loves to ski will have to save skiing for school breaks, as it's just not a priority over academics.

Very few afternoon classes at MSU Bozeman so kids can ski every day. The place is beautiful.

Another Utah vote. We live in Colorado and a lot of kids from our high ranking public HS have gone there in recent years. My son is a Sophomore there and absolutely loves it. He's made great friends and built a good community for himself. He went in undecided but is studying Applied Mathematics and QAMO. We've been very impressed with the support and guidance provided for undergraduates.

Not doing the honors college because it doesn't seem to provide much for the extra costs but he's participating in a program that provides undergraduate research opportunities for credit and the research he's doing is in line with his interests.

And of course the skiing is close and awesome.

Dartmouth does not have fencing
