Hit me with your recommendations for a school that has a stellar math program and has varsity fencing. He will likely fence but wants to be somewhere near the mountains or ski resorts and outdoor area for rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, paddle boarding. Very outdoorsy kid. Academic, high tester. Hasn't take the PSAT or SAT yet. Seems early but I am having a hard time finding this type of unicorn. Son goes to a huge public school where he is just a number and overlooked since he has strong test scores and academics so the counselor isn't much help.

You are ridiculous. Search this yourself. Oh I know - better yet have your kid do it.

Better than some of the nonsense swirling around here sometimes

Hmm looks like it’s skiing or fencing not both.

Look up The Common Data Set for colleges you might consider, especially small LACs. Make sure they actually graduate a good number of students in the desired major.

What the hell, this response is to put this ridiculous thread to the top to see how many pages we can take it.

He has said he wanted to be a math teacher or work in a math related field since third grade when his third grade teacher made him fall in love with mathematics. My husband is a math professor and I work in a math-related field. My mom and dad are both math teachers at public HS in the midwest. I can see DS being a math teacher.

For fencing, Notre Dame (I am an alum) and he isn't interested since no proximity to skiing. We have a condo in Park City so I could see him going to Utah. I advise a college sorority at JMU, which we suggested to him and there isn't much to do there but it's close to Massanutten, where my sister has a mountain house. DH/dad went to Penn as did grandparents and they have a good fencing program.

We used to live in Montana when he was little so he loves schools there. We are looking at schools in Colorado, which are hard for out of state, but he's pretty academic. Colorado College, University of Denver, University of Colorado, Boulder. Looking at University of Utah, Utah State, Montana, Montana State, Idaho, Idaho State and SMU Taos.

None of them have club fencing or fencing, but they do have skiing.

I think you guys can afford a college counselor.

I was a math major and skied a ton at Williams. There are places to go that are close enough you can just go in the afternoon when you’re done with class. I’m not sure if fencing is more than a club sport, though?

OP I do think you need to cool it and back off. Your son has years to figure this out.
