It matters just as much as a tournament in October or November or May, which is to say, it doesn’t really matter.

My son is playing in the Gettysburg Blast in a few weeks. It is preseason so I care less about the competition and more about his team developing cohesion. He is playing up an age group so I will be assessing him and his teammates ability to handle the physicality a year up. That is our sole purpose.

How old is your son?
Does his team currently technically and physically dominate their age group?

Tournaments are good preseason because they are a way to get a bunch of games in a short time before weekly play begins. You can help the new members of the team integrate.

Or you can just reach out to local clubs and play some free friendlies

What's wrong with playing free preseason friendlies with so many teams on the same levels within half hour of each other?
