Low SES mother asking: where to buy a dress

JC Penney has the widest selection of girls’ dresses I have seen at any of the brick and mortar stores. Windsor had a surprising amount of more modest/school event appropriate dresses than I expected.

Amazon actually has some nice dresses. Search for girls dresses.

I would try Macys first. If she’s a tall 5th grader she could probably wear either juniors or a kids size, so it will help to go to a store that has a decent selection of both.

I think you can find a very nice dress at Macy's or JC Penney's. No need to spend the money at Nordstrom or that boutique posted above where things are $100.

Good luck in your search! Remember, 5th grade girls look wonderful regardless of what they're wearing.

What's your budget? I also have a 10 year old. We needed special occasion dresses recently and found them at Nordstrom Rack. There were tons of choices and plenty under $50.

Nordstrom juniors department. They have nice dresses and they will have some on sale - often for as low as $20. You have to be patient and weed through some crap to find the nice ones.

We are going shopping later today. Please help me pick some stores that regular people go to for this kind of dress for an almost-11yo. She’s tall and thin for her age.

Yes, I have another thread going but no one is answering literally the question what stores should I go to.

Why even ask then? Can’t you just go to the mall and walk around? There are only a few stores that would remotely have something- and it’s pretty obvious

This was my suggestion on the other thread.
It’s hard to give suggestions without knowing your budget and kids style. My 11yo DD would hate wearing a dress. I also would have her wear something we already owned and save my money for an actual

Here are some ideas for what Nordstrom has. Don’t bother paying full price - look for the ones on sale (they have more sale items on racks in the store often):

Budget?

Macy’s will probably be your best option. They have a lot to choose from and prices are reasonable.

Also check out lulus online. Great for dresses. An xs woman’s dress might fit a teen or older tween.

But at 10 and thin, you may not find women’s clothes that fit. I’d try the dept stores first

Macy's has a great sale section with really cute dresses!

Agreed -- plus Kohl's, TJ Maxx or Marshall's.

Have fun!

I've literally found $100+ reduced to $15 at Macy's - that takes luck and time - but that's where I'd start. BTW SES isn't that relevant here - I don't like spending money on things the kid is going to wear once or twice.

Agree with this. We found some dresses online from Macy's that were significantly discounted (like less than $50) and nice enough that she could wear again for other things.
