Yes! This is a better look!!! The first one was hideous OP, especially bc you aren't 22 anymore! Dress with leggings is fine, no one will care, but try to go a little more sophisticated |
Unfortunately they don't hide my lumpy legs. Leggings smooth everything out (I see photos of myself in jeggings and think "Wow, I look 50 lbs lighter"). |
Agreed. I also think you could do something more structured like a shirt dress. Or even an oversized button down with leggings; my older sister does that often with high quality flats and a nice bag, and she looks great. |
Helpful, thanks! I suppose I like to emphasize my waist, so knit is easier. But I'll take a look around. |

OP, setting aside trends and fashion for a moment, because I don't think it really matters that much (you should wear what you like and you are comfortable in).
Have you ever explored Scandinavian fashion? They do a lot of dresses layered over pants, and I think the effect can be very cute. Check out the website below. It's not cutting edge fashion but if you really own the choice, I think it can look cool and interesting. Especially in middle age when it's not so much about dressing for men or even other women, but yourself. https://www.gudrunsjoden.com/en-us In addition to dresses over leggings, they also do dresses over loose linen pants sometimes, which I think can look cute if the proportions and colors are right. Like I like this look with the black dress over the brown wide leg pants, and how it is styled and accessorized: https://www.gudrunsjoden.com/en-us/clothes/dresses/jane-jersey-dress-in-organic-cotton-spandex-black-xs I would just let go of adhering to current fashion trends and carve out a sense of style that works for you personally. Often the best dressers are the ones who just eschew trends and wear clothes that are right for their bodies and their lives. |
Also wanted to note that they do leggings on this site that are designed to be layered under dresses -- very lightweight and made of nylon so they are less likely to cling or catch on dress fabric. You would never wear these without a dress, but they are perfect for your purposes: https://www.gudrunsjoden.com/en-us/clothes/leggings/product-136007-black-s-m |

Other people clearly move in trendier circles than I do because I think OP’s original link looks just fine! I see moms wearing similar things all the time on the weekend, at school pickup, etc
I think you should wear what you like. People always look better in whatever they’re comfortable in and so I think that will shine through. |
Yes this. I'd also look for full length leggings. The ankle leggings under a dress looks dated. Op, do you follow Kate Sturino? She's an 18/20 and has incredible fashion sense. Find her on IG! |

More Scandi inspiration for this look. The store linked above might be too "elementary school art teacher" for some (personally I love that look) but there are some other mid-priced brands that will look more on trend. Check out midi dresses from & Other Stories and COS, many of which are designed to be layered over tights, leggings, or pants. Here are a couple I like:
This dress with some navy leggings and either a Chelsea boot and cardigan (cold weather) or a pair of flat sandals and a jean jacket (warmer weather): https://www.stories.com/en_usd/clothing/dresses/midi-dresses/product.flutter-sleeve-midi-dress-blue.0840188028.html COS is actually showing this oversized linen shirt dress over linen wide leg pants, but I think it would work even better over a pair of thing black leggings. Add a pair of black mules and a great bag, plus good jewelry. This is actually "on trend" in addition to being how you like to dress. If need to belt it, do! https://www.cos.com/en_usd/women/womenswear/dresses/product.oversized-metallic-linen-midi-shirt-dress-beige.1217096001.html |

I was in Sweden last year and lots of women wear tunic dresses like these with leggings and tights: https://noanoa.com/collections/dresses-women?filter.p.product_type=Tunic&filter.v.price.gte=&filter.v.price.lte=&sort_by=manual
(This brand doesn't ship to the US yet but it's the best representation of the style, I see similar dresses at H&M and Zara sometimes) |
| Op, I also like an oversized button down with leggings. You could belt it if you want more cinching at the waist, and in that case I'd look for a shirt-dress. But the button down feels more polished. |
Appreciate all the work you've done, but this is very much not my style. |
I'm going to try this - thanks! I actually want to err on the side of casual, but I think with the right shoes and a casual bag, it would still work. |
| Also printed Indian cotton tunics and bottoms. I’m Indian, and think this look is under rated by some of all ethnicities. |

I wear dresses with leggings a LOT.
My recommendations for the first pic you showed -- make the dress a bit shorter and make the colors match better. I also like a dress w/ leggings and a third layer like a jacket. |
