Lobbying Bowser to call up the national guard

We do need a temporary solution to control acute symptoms and spread but in long term effective judiciary and efficient policing is a must. Bringing in guards or military is like keeping patients in ER for continued treatment for chronic illnesses.

No it isn't. There is no point in keeping patients in ER if there are no doctors and no medicine.

The problem is the lack of a crime lab and lack of prosecution, which is related to that. The NG wouldn't do anything different than the police can do. The problem is what happens then?

I agree. Criminals aren't being prosecuted. Unless the NG includes a bunch of lawyers with prosecutorial powers, this wont' help much.

Well, they wouldn't be able to drive their getaway cars if there were manned checkpoints. That would be a win in and if itself.

This is such a b.s. political request that defies logic.

Has anyone who ever seriously considered this actually looked at the makeup of the DC National Guard?

Multi-Agency Augmentation Command, commanded by an O7
74th Troop Command (United States), commanded by an O6
372nd Military Police Battalion ("Red Hand")
547th Transportation Company
104th Maintenance Company
260th Regiment (Regional Training Institute)
257th Army Band "The Band of the Nation's Capital"
1-224th Aviation Security and Support Battalion
D Company (Air Ambulance)
Detachment 1, A Company
1-126th General Support Aviation Battalion
Detachment 1, C Company (Air Ambulance)
District of Columbia Medical Command
Detachment 4, Operational Support Airlift Command
Recruiting and Retention Battalion
National Guard Bureau Legal Support Office
District of Columbia Air National Guard
113th Wing
113th Operations Group
121st Fighter Squadron
201st Airlift Squadron
113th Maintenance Group
113th Support Group
113th Medical Group
121st Weather Group
231st Combat Communications Squadron

Of all the listed units, there are basically just two companies (70-100 people each) that are trained as police officers. Those are part of the 372nd Military Police Battalion ("Red Hand") which includes:

273rd Military Police Company
276th Military Police Company

Are you expecting the 121 Weather Group to patrol the streets? How about the 257th Army Band? Some of the flight attendants of the 201st Airlift Squadron? The 104th Maintenance Company (they could hit people with wrenches I guess).

Checkpoints? To check papers?

Sheesh. Seriously?

Identification is racist. Minorities do not have equal access to official government documents.

It is beyond racist to believe this about minorities.

That plenty to set up checkpoints. How are you driving your stupid ATVs or hot cars up and down mass ave, Wisconsin, western, CT, by the capitol with checkpoints?

And make the checkpoints dynamic . This behavior will stop real fast. My spouse didn't fight in Fallujah and I raise the kids and work, so when we are all finally together we can live in Fallujah. This city is maximum BS.

MPD already doesn’t do anything. So the fix is to pay for more police to not do anything?

Without effective prosecution, which is not a NG operating task, and without cultural changes, would be ineffective.

How would NG have stopped the shooting of a driver in Dupont yesterday or the man outside City Center on Monday? Knee jerk feel good solutions rarely accomplish much.

NP. Is this the same uber driver as the Afghan interpreter that was murdered last year? Did they finally catch his kid killers?

If the city had UBI, the Afghan interpreter would not have had any reason to be out working as an Uber driver.

If the city passes UBI and my taxes go up EVEN MORE than they have in the past 3 years to fund UBI, that will be the move that finally pushes me out after 30 years. I’ll have a lot of company too, before you say something stupid like don’t let the door hit you blah blah. Don’t believe me? Let’s revisit the halcyon years of 1970-1999 in the District for a refresher on what it looks like when the local government sees its mission of Sticking It To The Man on behalf of POC, while simultaneously presiding over a failed state with the nation’s highest rate of violent crime.

Spoiler alert, I won’t be alone AND we won’t be quickly replaced by DINKS craving violent “vibrancy.” That’ll take another 20 years (see 2000-2015 for reference)

You did not know how progressives view crime before you voted??

You people are so dumb. She can't call the National Guard as Mayor. Only the President, Congress or Secretaries of the Army and Air Force can. Remember when we couldn't get the National Guard during Jan 6 b/c Trump wouldn't allow it.

They have been unwilling.

Yes shocking, and not just re: people of color, or young people. No government photo ID is a huge source of so many problems that other countries don’t have, because they have UNIVERSAL ID!
