Why do people think it’s ok to not wear a mask on a flight when they are clearly sick?

I go on a plane like I'm going into a survival challenge. Anything that could possibly weaken me physically, spiritually, or psychologically, I want to cover for. Mask, eyemask, meds, snacks, earplugs, earphones, chargers, wrap, neck pillow, gum, sanitizing wipes. I'm expecting people to smell bad, spread germs, be loud, get in my space. I plan accordingly, and I try not to offend anyone myself.

+1. That includes when we are lining up for the flight.

Yes, the plane itself has better filtration when flying than the terminal (though easier to distance there), jetbridge, or the plane when taxiing.

Not much you can do but wear a mask yourself.

This is not true. The plane filtration being good is a myth

That’s why 50 percent more if them died of Covid and will continue to do so. Yay. Hope more of them suffer.

I’m sorry OP

This is not a republican issue. More democratics are like that.

Funny, found this on the CDC website from May 2023:

"Cabin Ventilation & Air Filtration
Large commercial jet aircraft recirculate 35%–55% of the air in the cabin, mixed with outside air. The recirculated air passes through high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters that capture 99.97% of particles (bacteria, larger viruses or virus clumps, fungi) ≥0.3 µm in diameter. Furthermore, laminar airflow generally circulates in defined areas within the aircraft, thus limiting the radius of distribution of pathogens spread by small-particle aerosols. As a result, the cabin air environment is less conducive to the spread of most infectious diseases than typical environmental systems in buildings."

Does it make a difference?

Yeah, I don’t wear masks. Maybe on Halloween.

You should just start bicycling everywhere. Better for your carbon whatever. No menacing “other people” to contend with.

Don’t worry, soon enough they’ll put you in your own little egg like in the Matrix and your life will be perfect.

The anti-maskers said in 2020 stuff like "we dont need masks! Just stay home if youre sick"

Those were the exact people who went out while sick and infected others.

I mask on planes because of these disgusting degens, no need to get myself sick along with them.

Now maybe you had two people behaving badly.

But you also could have described me on my most recent flight. We had covid in early December. All four of us. All tested positive, 3/4 of us had fevers for a few days, all had symptoms (though of varying degrees). We isolated at home as we should have for 10 days. By the end of the ten days, we were all testing negative. But I had lingering headache, fatigue, sore throat, and cough for more than a week after that, and the cough is still on going (more than 4 weeks after my first positive test).

So yes, for both of our two Christmas flights, I was coughing and not feeling well. But by any definition, I was completely past the contagious phase.

Yep, this. You are only in control of yourself. And most public spaces carry a risk of germs. They always have. Humans immune systems have always adapted.

You can only protect yourself from the morons. Wear a mask. I haven't flown since 2020 because it's like the greyhound in the sky.

He was not entirely sympathetic and muttered something about having COVID himself. Neither husband nor wife were wearing a mask on the packed flight. I don’t get it.

Yuck. I cannot even imagine how much sickness (clear/obvious and even asymptomatic spreading) may be swirling around in planes post holidays.

+1, and I was like this before covid (though I used a scented scarf and not a mask).
