Advisory

Extra extra read all about it. Krazy Karen says teachers that are attacked in class and teachers that are told to inflate grades are all alcoholics. That explains the severe shortage. Alcoholism.

It is. 45 wasted minutes. After school activities could be done during “home room”. Instead, kids just sit and stare. It could absolutely be repurposed but that would require admin to be innovative. Let’s be real, we’re not dealing w the best or brightest in MCPS.

Wow. Our kids’ advisory is 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes in the afternoon.

How I wish. Somehow it doesn’t count as an extra class either… bc we technically aren’t “teaching”. Also, at our school, the team leads and content specialists aren’t required to teach advisory. They have 4 classes while the rest of us have 5 but it’s “okay” bc advisory isn’t a class. It makes no sense.

Meant to say we have 6 while they have 4.

Are okay? You sound like you need help. Get some.

One of the few things were students, teachers and administration agree with. Advisory is a waste and should be eliminated. BUT Monifa and Central Office want it so they can say they are promoting wellness, SEL lessons, community circles and whatever buzz word they hear on a TED talk. Get rid of this and put more time towards classes.

Advisory is not 45 minutes. Perhaps it is wasted time for your perfect genius, but for many kids, it's an opportunity to review something they don't understand, or to retake a quiz they missed while throwing up with a stomach flu. Your kid can read a book or hang out with friends for a little bit - it won't kill them.

Lmao. DP…. If you can manage to read…. Advisory is different at every school. Try and keep up… so yes, at schools where your kid doesn’t go (imagine a world that doesn’t revolve around you, I know it’s difficult but try…) it’s 45 minutes of wasted time bc no one gets to retake a quiz or learn something they missed. The entire point of this post was about how advisory is a missed opportunity for things like this.

Advisory as a resource class for those who need it is exactly that: support for those who need it. If your child has an advisory class, either they need help and support, or, a mistake was made in scheduling.

Again, you’re wrong. Can you read? Other teachers are writing about their actual experiences and you’re just dismissing them as if you have a clue. For example, at my school, every single kid has advisory every single morning. It’s not for support. It’s not a “mistake” in scheduling. The entire school has it for 45 minutes before first period. We do various lessons each day. Sometimes it’s Nearpod, sometimes it’s IXL, etc.

I came into MCPS from a different state. We didn't have "advisory" but we did have 45 minute town halls daily. This was held in the cafeteria. Teachers rotated in and out, so theyd be there at least once a week. This was basically a running study hall. For example, if kids needed help, they knew their math teacher would be there every Tuesday and Thursday. It was also used as a time for make-ups, etc. It sounds chaotic but we had it down to down to a science. It ran really well. I 100% agree that MCPS advisory is a waste of everyone's time because it isnt being used properly at some places and its not fair to those who have to teach (I don't care what admin says, it's a class) You're responsible for 20+ kids for 45 minutes. You take attendance. It's a class. It's just another way MCPS gets to subvert the contract. MCEA should have been on this forever ago, but bc it's not uniform across the county, they get away with it.

Advisory was widespread in MCPS as far back as at least 2011. Long before any of the initiatives you’re complaining about.

You’re thinking of Resource, not advisory.

Name the school.
I want to know which MCPS school has a long enough school day for a daily 45 min advisory followed by academic periods and a 30 min lunch. Even back in 2003, when we had homeroom before period 1, it was 30 min or less.

NP can you stop. You post this on every thread. Come up with something new please., belittling mental health problems and suggesting anyone you disagree with has them is not a good look on you.

This. We are in Moco. Ours are 2x a week.

In ours, they take special classes (gardening, hiking, painting, etc) that don't have grades.

I think it's actually a good idea. Although I'd be equally good with them having dedicated hw time.
