Curious, OP. Why is your protein goal so high?

This was my question as well

Not OP, but I'm trying to lose weight.

But you’ll never lose weight eating 120g of non-animal protein. Vegan protein is incredibly dense in calories unless you plan on eating nothing but tofu, or your weight in spinach.

Does eating protein result in weight loss?

That's an extremely complicated question to answer. Consumed protein is broken down into amino acids, which the body uses to make new proteins for tissue repair, growth (e.g., muscle), and for other things. Protein should not be the primary source of energy for the body, though. Think of protein as the source of building blocks for the body to repair and grow. Instead, energy for action, movement, etc., comes from fat and carbohydrates. In the absencen of sufficient fat and carbs for energy, the body can use protein (ingested or from lean mass) for energy, but at an high cost. Protein is an inefficient source of energy for the body, which will "waste" a lot in the form of heat when converting to glucose. The body can and will break down and use stored fat as a preferred source.

So, under some circumstances, the answer to your question could be, "yes." For example, if you eat only protein, the body will go to stored fats for energy, which is weight loss.

If I drank 3.5 OWYN protein shakes to reach 120g protein it’s only 750 calories.

But I’m not OP and I don’t limit my protein to vegan sources.

I like Vega mixed with oat milk. Agree that it’s not good with water.

Other ideas -
Hemp seeds on oatmeal or in smoothies, 2 tB is about 8 g protein
Nuts and nut butters
Edamame as a snack
Tofu scramble for breakfast and lunch
Whole wheat has a surprising amount of protein. A high-quality whole wheat bread will have 7 g per slice. I use Sfoglini whole grain pasta and it has 8g protein per serving. Or use lentil or chickpea pasta.
If you make your own hummus, it can be quite high protein due to the chickpeas and tahini. I find that store bought is not nearly as healthy due to additives.

That’s great! But OP won’t consume it because it contains artificial sweetener.

Anonymous wrote:Any recommendations for protein supplements for someone who mostly eats a plant-based diet? No added sugars or sweeteners. I've tried Vega protein powders and they have stevia, are gross, or both. Definitely open to other ideas besides protein powder but it's been hard to get it via diet alone without eating like 5 meals a day. Aiming for 120g a day. Thank you!

I feel as though you have to choose what kind of trendy orthorexia you want, and stay in that lane.

Either decide that a vegan diet is healthy, and then eat a whole food diet with a normal amount of protein.

Or decide that protein is king, and that you need to eat enough protein for a cheetah, and give up the vegan thing.

But using processed foods like protein powder because your orthorexia beliefs are interfering in this way is just messed up.

120g is the recommended amount for a 350 lb person. If you weigh that much, then I would work with a nutritionist. Otherwise, it's not a healthy target.
