Vegan protein supplement recommendations

Anonymous
Any recommendations for protein supplements for someone who mostly eats a plant-based diet? No added sugars or sweeteners. I've tried Vega protein powders and they have stevia, are gross, or both. Definitely open to other ideas besides protein powder but it's been hard to get it via diet alone without eating like 5 meals a day. Aiming for 120g a day. Thank you!

You’re going to have a really hard time if you’re rigid about the added sugar, and especially the added artificial sweeteners.

I’m a weightlifter and I have no advice. I don’t even know what to suggest. I drink Vega because I have an intolerance to both whey and casein. Getting in my protein is paramount to everything else, so I accept the added sweeteners in order to get in quick and easy dense protein.

I haven’t a clue what else I could suggest to you that would be high protein that’s vegan and will still get you 120(!)g of protein without thousands of added calories.

I’ve tried them all and honestly, Vega is the best. It tastes like chalk, but eventually you just get used to it.

Following. I have a smoothie with Future Kind vanilla protein powder every day. I think it has stevia but is not as sickeningly sweet as other powders. I’m still lucky to get 60 grams of protein a day as a 60-ish smaller woman who can’t eat much if I want to maintain my weight and eat mostly vegan. I have no idea how to get to 120 grams. Are you a man? How many calories do you eat a day? If you are “mostly” plant based, what about eggs?

A block of tofu is 40-70grams of protein.

I use Evolve which I think tastes pretty good, but it does have added sugar--like 3 or 4 grams. But natural, not artificial.

Thanks all! I might try Evolve; thank you for that recommendation. A few g of sugar is OK. I just avoid artificial sweeteners including sweeteners like stevia (which I think tastes gross). If any other recs, please keep them coming.

Curious, OP. Why is your protein goal so high?

You could try Orgain - it doesn’t taste great, but if you are adding it to a smoothie or oatmeal or something it won’t make a difference.

I've tried a bunch and really like OWYN protein shakes. I find stevia nasty, but don't mind the monk fruit in this one.

They have a protein powder too but I haven't tried it yet.

(I also like Think protein bars and Built Puff bars)

This was my question as well

A lot of plant protein powders have been tested and found to be high in heavy metals, so I'd be wary.

Not OP, but I'm trying to lose weight.

An omelet with an egg and some egg whites and veg is a great way to boost protein and keep calories reasonable. I also like a lot of Maria Emmerich's recipes using egg whites and gelatin to create bagels, deep dish pizza, noodles and wraps.

Whole Foods pea protein is good for me.

I sometimes add silken tofu to smoothies with soy milk, orange juice, and blueberries or raspberries. It’s delicious.

Also:
Edamame and roasted tofu are easy to make

But you’ll never lose weight eating 120g of non-animal protein. Vegan protein is incredibly dense in calories unless you plan on eating nothing but tofu, or your weight in spinach.
