Skills based grading is still there for the schools using it.

Yes for this school year, and apparently, for non high school credit classes into the future - The new scale will apply to all high school credit-bearing classes and will be required to be used beginning in School Year 2024-25.

MS and HS teachers can assign a grade of a "0" if no work is done. If an attempt is made and the assignment is turned in the minimum grade is a 50%.

+1 way it should be!

I don’t get it. So, if the assignment is late, it’s now a 50%??

No.

During Covid, the policy was changed to where:

- if a child did nothing at all (did not even try; never handed in anything at all), the LOWEST score they could receive was “50%.”

That policy was passed by the state board of education under 2 justifications:

- Covid-19 crisis, and

- equity.

Partially, that policy has been retracted.

But there are other major issues with FFX planned grading policy. These FFX policies are confusing and will be extremely hard on students and teachers as the whole system attempts to figure out what FFX is doing.

As a parent, this worries me as my 10th grader begins thinking about college, while trying to maintain the highest GPA she can.

I am also worried about the effect of these novel policies on the existing crisis in teacher retention and hiring in FFX. As background, teachers are quoting in droves and few are applying to fill the ranks.

What is a 10-point grading scale?

Every letter grade is 10 points including F. So instead of F being 0-59, it’s 50-59 like other letter grades

Schools aren’t being forced to follow those guidelines.

Looks like they are starting next year. SGB has got to go away! Can’t come soon enough.

The new scale will apply to all high school credit-bearing classes and will be required to be used beginning in School Year 2024-25.

Yes, they are. Over some things, principals have a lot of control. Over others, not.

Colleges in the UK are experiencing record drop-out rates ending up in students saddled with debt and no degree due to lax grading policies.

We have the same thing here in districts that adhere to open enrollment policies and 50% minimum grades.

Open enrollment is purportedly designed to prevent teacher bias from shutting out students from courses, but in fact ensures that students who aren't ready for the course will sign up for it anyway, resulting in pressure on teachers to lower standards and/or inflate grades while the student learns little or nothing. If you're worried about teacher bias , give all students automatically graded competency exams that they have to score specific grades on to enroll in specific classes.

It doesn't help disadvantaged students in the long run to just give them a pass. Everyone has to show competency at some point down the line. It's also deeply prejudicial to cast a shadow on the achievement of bright, hardworking students from disadvantaged backgrounds who absolutely belong in those courses and legitimately earned their grade to lump them in with privileged but not too bright nor studious kids who also milk these policies.

50% minima also outrageously inflate averages and mask lack of mastery.

These policies are bad for the country on so many levels.

Then FCPS needs to be ready for a lot of transfers. No sane parent with a college bound student would keep them enrolled in a school using SBG.

Finally, FCPS leadership looked closely at the division’s current allowance of two grading scales. After weighing many factors, including stakeholders’ familiarity with different grading scales, the decision was made to utilize the current modified 10-point scale (with a minimum score of 50 in defined circumstances) as the single grading scale division-wide. This scale is already in place at a majority of schools within the division and is familiar to FCPS students and parents. The new scale will apply to all high school credit-bearing classes and will be required to be used beginning in School Year 2024-25.

WTF is this?

No more pluses or minuses?

If so, this is a HUGE policy change and should be subject to debate and parent/student input. Not slipped into an email.

We fought too hard for FairGrade to let this slide.

And the characterization that it is already familiar to FCPS parents is a lie.

Where tf did you get that? The emailed clearly states current modified 10 point plan. Our current plan uses plusses and minuses.
