+1. $600k townhouse is very doable in Burke/Burke Centre. Very safe and quiet. Great schools. An especially good option if VRE (commuter train) works for you in terms of job schedule and location (check out map and schedule at VRE.org). Otherwise, you’re a 15-20 minute drive from either Vienna or Franconia Springfield Metro. Also lots of buses to Pentagon.

20853 the Rockville HS cluster for schools. Great community.

If you can get past the Brady bunch exterior, this neighborhood feeds into good schools in a very tight knit community with a fun pool, parks, walking paths, etc.

Check out Olney and Brookeville. Every now and then you might find something in the $600 range.

+1. Target the following elementary schools: Oakland Terrace, Flora Singer, Forest Knolls, maybe Glen Haven. You should be able to find something although it will be modestly sized and unlikely to have brand new finishes.

Oops, meant to add Rock View elementary too.

Be sure to search middle and high schools before you settle on a neighborhood.

I love this area, but OP specifically said "not too far north" and this is about as far north in MoCo that you can get. Still a great neighborhood with great schools, and if I were OP I would open my search to this area.

+1. These turn over somewhat frequently in Vienna - it's a nice little community. Lots of kids b/c the middle school is really close by.

This is also a nice community - immaculately kept:

Olney, Silver Spring north of Glenmont metro. There isn't much inventory right now because anything under 800k usually sells pretty fast.

Springfield and Annandale inside the beltway, as well as further outside the beltway - southwest along 395.

3 bedroom townhouses in FCC for under that budget. Yes, you can find it. However it'll probably be a lot smaller than the American dream

NP, here’s a house zoned for Rock View near Kenmont (the neighborhood pool) for under your budget. They re-did the kitchen but it does need some updates.
