What Would It Take For Notre Dame Football To Join The Big Ten or The SEC ?

No progress has been reported on the negotiation of a new contract between the two parties.

Big Ten Conference will pay about $90 million to each of its members in just a few years, but will be paying in the $70 million to $75 million per team over the next two years under the terms of its new deal with Fox, NBC, and CBS.

My understanding is that independent football teams, such as Notre Dame, are ineligible to receive a bye in the first round of the newly designed College Football Playoffs.

Projected payouts for SEC football teams are about $60 million per member.

This thread should focus on Notre Dame and what it will take to get Notre Dame football to join a conference.

The other thread is about Big Ten Conference expansion and it involves many schools and different considerations.

I started thread because of a strong interest in Notre Dame football and the dearth of current articles about Notre Dame football's upcoming TV/media rights contract negotiations.

If ND doesn’t join a major conference, they will be cut off in the near future from playing a decent schedule against the perennial top teams. Why schedule ND when you already have plenty of tough competition in your own conference?

The Notre Dame poster was doing well until he said “frankly I don’t care if we ever play Stanford again.”

Here’s the thing: Notre Dame’s administration does care, for a variety of reasons, and that’s what counts.

I'm that poster, and yeah - I know they care. I don't.
But do they care enough for that to be the deal breaker to joining the Big10? I think USC WOULD be a dealbreaker.
I think they like playing Stanford because it reenforces the idea that you can be a great academic school and a great sports school, but I don't think they outrank USC in the "want to be able to play them" category.

I also think Navy would be a dealbreaker, especially given the outrage when the game was cancelled in 2020. So if we have to continue playing Navy, and we only have one or two non-conference spots, I think they may be OK with giving up Stanford some years in return for the newly expanded Big 10 schedule.

The one thing I do know, for sure, that my father is up in heaven pulling any strings he can to make ND stay independent

And I think that will be the one thing that finally breaks the independence. Up until now, ND could basically call any school in the country and say "let's play" and they'd work it out. If these mega conferences demand basically full conference schedules from all their teams, eventually it could get too hard to craft a meaningful schedule outside of a conference. I hate it, but that's where it seems like we're heading.

Notre Dames annual schedule is not against "top teams" - they generally rotate the same 10-15 schools with a focus on Navy, Stanford and Boston College as constants.

These new mega-conferences are just going to tie up scheduling too much. Additionally, one of the strongest arguments for not being in a conference was that ND is a national school and wanted to play games all over the country - well now that the conferences don't have any meaningful geographic alignment, that's not as relevant. Now we could join the big 10 and still play USC every year as an in-conference game. Except for Stanford and Navy, we could play a very normal-looking schedule from within the Big 10. Navy can still be our out-of-conference game, and frankly i don't care if we never play stanford again.

Great points.

The Big Ten is truly a coast-to-coast conference with USC & UCLA and Maryland & Rutgers.

Most of Notre Dame's traditional rivals are current Big Ten members or likely to join soon. (Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, USC) and Stanford is a possible Big Ten member if the Pac-12 loses even one more team such as Colorado.

Go big 10!!!!

And they typically play at least one other top team each year, other than USC.

Which lets them always have a great season and a shot at the playoffs. In the big 10, the would need the stars to align if they want to compete for a conference championship let alone a national championship.

A conference may send more than one team to the newly configured 12 team College Football Playoff (CFP).

"The stars to align" means "rise to the level of Big Ten play week after week". I was a bit surprise to read the viewership figures in an earlier post which noted that the average Big Ten college football game has significantly higher viewership than does the average Notre Dame game. Perhaps this is due to the level of opponents and due to the lack of impact on conference standings regarding Notre Dame.

Notre Dame's new incoming AD (athletic director) is the former head of NBC Sports. While he was head of NBC Sports, NBC negotiated and became part of the new Big Ten Conference football TV contract along with Fox & CBS.

My thought is that Pete Bevacqua--ex-NBC Sports head & new incoming Notre Dame AD--understands that Notre Dame is unlikely to remain independent in the world of mega-conferences due to money and a probable lack of quality football opponents necessary to make a run at a national title in football. Bevacqua's statement is the current Notre Dame company line & a smart negotiating tactic.
