In 2024, UCLA & USC will leave the Pac 12 Conference to join the Big Ten Conference.
Expect the University of Washington & the University of Oregon to follow. Then Stanford & UCal-Berkeley will apply for Big Ten membership. (The Univ. of Washington & the Univ. of Oregon have already applied for Big Ten membership, but--even though thoroughly vetted & cleared by the Big Ten--their applications are on hold as the Big Ten university presidents do not want to be responsible for the collapse of the Pac 12 Conference.) The Big 12 Conference and the Big Ten Conference are waiting for the University of Colorado to make the first move. When Colorado moves to the Big 12, then the Pac 12 will be devoured by other conferences. The Pac 12 media rights deal expires on July 1, 2024 and no new deal has been reached. Follow the money--where the Big Ten Conference rules--and it is easy to understand why U Washington, U Oregon, Stanford, & UCal-Berkeley want to move to the Big Ten Conference. As of now, Notre Dame will remain an independent with a working agreement with the ACC. If Notre Dame football does decide to join a conference, their realistic options are limited to the Big Ten Conference, The SEC, or the NFL. |
According to various news sources, many ACC teams have investigated exit options from that league in order to join the SEC or the Big Ten. Teams most interested in exiting the ACC are rumored to be Clemson, FSU, & the University of Miami.
The Big Ten has big eyes on Georgia Tech in order to get into the Atlanta area market. The ACC contract exit penalties are too high. The ACC will have to dissolve before teams can afford to leave the conference. |
San Diego State stays.
They were seen as likely Pac12 replacements. That ACC GOR must be iron-clad. |
UNC & UVA to SEC/B10 rumors. Clemson would join the SEC in a heartbeat but it’s a football school and the SEC already has many top football programs. Clemson has subpar basketball, solid baseball, no swimming, just added gymnastics. Nowadays, the SEC is a very competitive basketball conference and Olympic sports powerhouse. |
I'm from the Midwest and really hate these Big Ten expansions. Having Rutgers and UCLA in the Big Ten is stupid. |
Why do you think kids go from Maryland to Wisconsin or New Jersey to IU? Where are there more high school students than in California? I get the nostalgia but the schools know exactly what they’re doing. |
The ACC teams gave their TV rights to the league through 2036. Unless they find a way to get them back, they aren't going anywhere. Clemson needs to exit while they still can, but the only expansion round where they SEC added another school in a state with an SEC school was Texas, and SC is not as big as Texas and Clemson does not generate the revenue that Texas does. They aren't a math for the Big10 academically and their TV market isn't worth the headache. I would expect the Big10 to go for Miami, UVA, UNC, and GT and the SEC to grab VT and NC State if the conference dissolves |
They are getting TV payouts for football. It has nothing to do with attracting regular students or catering to the student body, it is all about getting large checks from ESPN and Fox. Meanwhile, teams on a shoe string budget still have to travel to away conference games halfway across the country. I'm sure UCLA field hockey loves to prospect of getting to Ames Iowa one week and then Lincoln Nebraska the next. |
Well, it’s not exactly a coincidence that the biggest TV markets also have the largest number of high school students. Synergy! |
(OP here) I share your sentiment, but the world of college football has changed and is continuing to evolve. It's all about money for the schools, the conferences, and now--to a much lesser extent--the players. Fans remain emotionally involved, but the reality is that NCAA Division 1 college football is really a professional endeavor. |
The most recent news reports that I have read indicate otherwise regarding San Diego State. |
The top end players have figured it out and go to the highest bidder. It's the non-revenue sports who get the short end of the stick |
Why would UCLA ever travel to Ames, Iowa for a B1G game? |
College athletic conferences are becoming meaningless, if they aren’t already. |
Is Ames any different than Corvallis, OR? |
