Is BASIS McLean as good or better than the Big 3?

Anonymous
The Big 3 schools (and plenty others) have better reputations, better facilities, and offer a more well-rounded education than Basis. Basis VA (not to be confused with Basis schools in other states) is for profit.

See I’m the OP and I didn’t know that. Thanks for the information. I’m not a troll, a “booster” or anything else. All I know is that I googled it and saw it has very high test scores and a great track record when it comes to college admissions so I asked the question. It does seem like test scores and colleges admissions are on par with the Big 3, right?

Remember when the kids left school and were picked up by a random guy in a car?

Why? It’s a serious question. YOU go away. This is my thread!

I’m asking not telling.

Their website says the average SAT for the Class of 2022 was 1458, the average ACT was 33, that 50 percent of the class got into a top 25 and that 89 percent got into a top 50. The college list also includes every Ivy, MIT, Cal Tech and Stanford. So I’m asking: how does this compare with the Big 3? Why am I a terrible person simply for asking the question?

Note that the college list is acceptances (i.e., a smaller number of strong students can account for a big chunk of the so-called top schools), not matriculations.

And there's no transparency into absolute numbers. You'd expect something like this to be more credible.

You’re coming across as inauthentic because you’ve already told us your kids are grown and done with college. You said you had a curiosity coming over to this forum from the money and finance forum and after you googled the school. And you’re keeping it going with the questions, comparing it to big 3. I don’t buy it. I know that doesn’t matter to you. I think you should let it go instead of stirring up trouble when you (admittedly) have absolutely no skin in the game.

I don't know how it stacks up with the Big 3, but I'm not one who pays too much attention to college placement. I just had a kid go through the admissions process and it is so, so much more nuanced than a list can capture. There is no doubt the school is a STEM grinder, but ask someone whose kid goes there what their curriculum lacks and the ECs/sports they don't offer (either due to lack of interest by the student body or the school's choice) that the typical private (or even public) school in this area provides. If comparisions must be made, it probably makes more sense to compare Basis to TJ.

I’m not an idiot, I know that. But they made clear that half of the class got into the top 25. So they ARE talking about matriculations in a pretty precise way. B

How is it “stirring up trouble” to ask about a school I know nothing about? And just because my kids are grown doesn’t mean I have no skin in the game. For one thing, I have grandkids in NOVA.

It’s all well and good that you don’t “pay too much attention to college placement,” but this is my thread and that’s the question I asked. I didn’t ask about ECs or anything else.

You’ve attached Holton’s school profile, which it shares with colleges. That’s a different thing. Having said that, there aren’t a lot of Ivy matriculations on that list outside of Penn and it does seems like more than or at least close to 11 percent of the graduates are matriculating below the top 50 so it wouldn’t appear that it’s any more impressive of a list than BASIS.
