There is none. |
if you have an incoming preK3 student, i would maybe not worry too much about it. you can after 2 years decide if the swing space works for you or instead lottery elsewhere for K. |
They're not going to tell you the swing space far in advance. DCPS has certain spaces available, and the schools being renovated rotate through them. So the spaces that become available for Tyler will depend on how the renovations of other schools go, how long they take.
There are certain spaces that DCPS owns and has announced the intention of using for swing. Meyer, Sharpe, Old Banneker (Euclid St), KC Lewis (in LeDroit Park), and Emery come to mind. You can look at those locations and decide how you feel about them, because it's a good chance it will be one of them. Look, a lot can change about a school. Principals can come and go. Programming can change in big ways. Schools can be opened, closed, merged, feeders can change, and you'll get about a year of notice, or less. This is the way a school district works-- all the schools are pieces of a puzzle and they're not going to cater to any one school and its parents. |
If you think "far in advance" means in advance of families having to make 2023-24 lottery selections then either (i) you don't speak and understand English or (ii) you work for DCPS Central. Someone observed that DCPS should be communicating information about what schools and what swing spaces will be used. You replied to say "they aren't going to tell you". No sh*t Sherlock. The point was that they should. Do you really think a competent agency wouldn't know what schools will be renovated next year, or where they'll swing? |
Wow, so rude. As you have been told, JO Wilson is not slated for renovation for several years. It's really not that big a deal. And people who actually go to JO Wilson may have more information than members of the general public. If you have such a hard time with this, it's going to be a difficult school district for you to live in. |
They're not telling you the swing space now because they don't know. It isn't decided yet. It depends on how things go with the available spaces. "Renovation begins in '24" means that *planning for it* begins in FY 24. They do not actually swing until FY 2025. You are confusing school years with fiscal years perhaps. Here's a letter that says when it will actually start: https://resources.finalsite.net/images/v1631716822/jowilsondcorg/n2vai1iyfd7g83qxzoh9/44ca6627-e70b-4408-b6e2-071a5c78bc8e2.pdf They do know which schools will be renovated next year and it won't be JO Wilson. And they know which swing spaces are likely to be available, and they seem to have a tentative plan of a trailer-based space. It's not like they just have no clue and it could be literally anywhere. The final decision has not yet been made. Because it depends. https://app.box.com/s/m0sjaadtl7yveo6lfl46odsasgfarnkx Here is the budget. You will find JO Wilson on page 170. |
OMG! The bolded is not how public information should be communicated. There should not be secret information handed to people in the know. The fact that you think that would be SOP tells me you lack the most basic understanding of how effective governments operate. The idea that "I have been told" because DCUM anonymous posters declared it to be so is...funny. |
Look, I'm no defender of DCPS central office, nor of DGS. But you're blowing this way out of proportion. The modernization schedule is not a secret at all. It's right there in the city budget documents. If you would click on the link I provided, you would easily find it. Here is the letter sent to families with children at the school: https://resources.finalsite.net/images/v1631716822/jowilsondcorg/n2vai1iyfd7g83qxzoh9/44ca6627-e70b-4408-b6e2-071a5c78bc8e2.pdf It can be found on the Facilities tab of the JO Wilson website. https://www.jowilsondcps.org/about/facilities |
OP here -- thanks to all for your info and insights. I'll just say that while I totally understand why DCPS doesn't know where schools will swing to much in advance, as a parent trying to plan it's also super frustrating. As another poster said, I really don't want a car commute, and that seems like the most likely outcome here. So do I try to get my kid into another neighborhood school we can walk to? The Spanish immersion portion also adds a layer here--do I want to start my kid into Spanish immersion and then possibly pull her out in a few years if the swing space is far enough away to be annoying (which seems likely but not guaranteed)? Am I being selfish for putting commute times at the top of my priority list (since PK generally seems good all over the Hill)? Sigh. |
Part of the issue with DCPS not being able to announce locations way in advance is that they DO actually consult with the school community. SWS was slated to be moved to the site that CHML used during its modernization (about 2 miles up N Cap) and the community revolted (understandably as CHML decimated its ECE during the reno because no one wanted to put their 3 year old on a non-seatbelt-having bus for 2 hours/day; literally blew through its 300 kid waitlist) and they ended up w/ trailers near Browne instead. So DCPS might have a plan for the Tyler reno, but it's 100% not set in stone yet. |
Anyone wanna bet the Tyler community doesn't have the same pull, political capital or "voice" as SWS did in theirs? There's a difference in the populations but I just can't put my finger on it... |
JO Wilson's community is pushing for the Browne space given the two options... There's no reason to think Tyler won't also be given a voice. Also, the UMC white people at Tyler just got the whole school turned into a dual language school over the objections of many (including most long time teachers), so I'm not sure why you're assuming they have no clout. |
Reviving this thread...anyone have updates on where the Chisholm swing space will be located? |
Burroughs is starting its renovation next summer. They will be putting trailers on the field that the school uses. DCPS says these trailers will be used for the next 8 years as a future swing space for schools undergoing renovations. That sucks for Burroughs but at least Burroughs kids won’t have to ride the bus across town. |
Would be nice if they had a location a bit more central if they were going to use the same spot for multiple schools. Or at least one in the north half of the city and one further south. That is going to be a hike for students coming from Chisolm, or schools further south across the river in the future. I assume the city will provide buses for students whose families do not have cars, if they are expected to travel across the city to school? |
