+1! If you aren't interested just don't comment people, please. Geez, DCUM is so full of freaking Heathers sometimes, I swear. OP thank you for posting this because I too am already starting to think about Cmas and it takes me several months to get my act together. I appreciate the recs in this thread!

I usually do the following:

* "Spritz" cookies, but rolled/cut-out instead of pressed because that's how my mom always made them
* Vanillekipferl, which are such a pain to make but DH's favorite and very tasty
* Chocolate cherry thumbprints
* Pumpkin cookies - yes they feel more Thanksgiving, but they are so good
* Gooey buttercake cookies/bites, because I am from St. Louis

Side note to the poster who asked about puppy chow cookies (though I wasn't the one who mentioned them), they're a spinoff of the puppy chow mix made with Chex, which is really addictive.

Thank you for the puppy chow recipes!

Peppermint twists
Gingerbread
Spritz
Jam thumbprints
Rollo pretzels
Peppermint bark

This is the basic list I do every year for our family and friends. I make a full batch of each and then make little variety boxes as gifts for our friends and neighbors. We like to have a big cookie plate for Christmas but there is no way we could eat them all ourselves.

Rollo pretzel recipe please?

I haven't planned mine out yet, but these will definitely be on it. I used to love the butter cookies that came in a tin, and these are the same style (but better IMO) - https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/butter-cookies-100918

Fun thread. It is never too early to start dreaming of holiday cookies!

My formula usually is: 1 shortbread variety, 1 chocolate, 1 with a holiday spice profile, 1 nut-based, 1 wild card (in past years I've done lemon, peppermint, savory, ricotta etc.)
Anonymous
Cutout almond (with almond royal frosting)
Pizzelle's (anise)
Mint chocolate chip
Gingerbread (vanilla royal frosting)
Pumpkin with maple frosting

Those are the yearly ones, however we typically try out 1 or 2 new recipes a year.

Apparently you have even fewer things to do because you just came here to post a crummy comment. I’m sorry you have no joy.

Are you serious?

You don’t have to yammer in every thread, please.

I'll start thinking about this after Halloween.

This! I also have numerous family birthdays and other events (a wedding, a first communion) between now and the holidays, so I do little things here and there so I don’t get overwhelmed. I bought the 2022 White House Christmas ornament today, which I always forget about until my tree is already up! Starting in October, I start purchasing one gift card or taking out small bits of cash with every grocery order so that by the time I’m putting together gifts for teachers, daycare teachers, and the undergraduate and graduate student workers I supervise, I’m not losing my mind and feeling strapped for cash.

I’ve never made Christmas cookies but thinking I’d like to try this year for gifts. What do you think are the classic must haves for a beginner? Maybe 5 different kinds?

Angeletti; I make some with blue/white/silver sprinkles for our Jewish neighbors for Hanukkah

Snickerdoodles with halved red or green cherries

Bar cookies that are essentially the Tollhouse chocolate chip recipe but with red and green M&Ms instead of chocolate chips

Thumbprint cookies

Cutout sugar cookies
Snickerdoodles
Peanut butter blossoms
M&M Cookies
Maybe: Soft gingerbread cookies
