3) The album cover is dumb to be but whatever who cares

She doesn’t owe Kelis anything. Unfortunately, Kelis is in a situation many, many artists find themselves in. She doesn’t own and doesn’t get any credit for her early, most successful music. Her energy would be better spent mentoring other artists to help them avoid the same fate. Kelis is upset with Kelis, and with Pharrell and Chad. Beyoncé is collateral damage here.

Ironically, insisting Beyoncé get credit on something money-making on her songs is something people have criticized Beyoncé and her family for for years.

Honestly there is no such thing as new music. The songs I’ve heard all sound just like songs from the 90s.

Successful artists often demand songwriting credit when all they did was change a word or two. New songwriters or producers trying to break in agree to it. Beyonce contributes to songwriting but is not a songwriter. Similar to most pop artists.

If you just sing the song as the artist, you make (or keep) very little money, no matter how many albums you sell. Kelis (was tricked into, so she claims) signed a contract where she made $0 for her albums, and would only make money touring. And she does not own the masters.

Beyoncé's parents are very savvy business folks. She, or someone in her family, has had money-making roles on every album, song, and record she has ever made, starting from Destiny’s Child’s first album. You cannot get rich as an artist - you have to get credit for writing, producing, etc.

Singers, especially Black singers and others who do not have savvy families or access to lawyers, have been screwed over for DECADES, but Beyoncé’s family has figured out how to work the system to their advantage. People criticize her for taking songwriting credit, but that’s how you actually make money from albums - not as a singer.

Taylor Swift is another example of this - remember the big blow up with her old record label a few years ago? She doesn’t own her old music. I believe she ended up re-recording the albums.

Taylor swift is actually a song writer.
I love Beyoncé, but they are different artists.

Kelia isn’t asking for money or credit, she knows she signed a dumb contract and got scammed at the begin it of her career. She’s knows legally they owe her a damn thing, she just wanted a phone call. It’s the right thing to do. She knows Bey, they run in the same circles. Even if an agent or a manager called, it’s the barest minimum they could do. It’s the right thing to do.

^^ Well that’s hard to read; typing on my phone. I think you can get the gist of what I said.

I agree with you but that was not the point. Taylor got screwed out of her old music as many singers do.

Ok yes. I thought you were also making a point that Taylor doesn’t really write her music.
Nevermind.
I’m not sure how I would feel as a songwriter having a singer take part of the credit, when they changed a word.

The album sucks. It's shapeless and dull. I also can't get behind a woman in her 40s writing songs with the N word in them in the year 2022. Let's advance beyond that.

It’s a part of doing business. If you want Beyoncé or whomever else to sing your song, you have to share the credit. Look up some of the history of artists - most of them are broke. They all have the same story. They or their parents didn’t know what they were signing. You had some exceptions - MC Hammer turned down a record deal years before he was famous because he was making more money selling his tapes out of his trunk. As an artist, you have to find some way other than singing to make money on your songs.

I think Taylor was screwed out of her music when she wasn’t given an opportunity to buy her masters for a fair price. Not the same as Kelis and possibly not Beyonce.

Record companies are not giving total control to unproven new artists. Taylor’s Dad helped her so an adult was in the room to read the contract and advise her. Same would be true for Beyonce. Now that Taylor is successful her new record company basically gave her everything she wanted including the masters for all new music.

Lord, they forced her to remove the word "spazzin" from one of her new songs. The lyric is "Spazzin on that azz". Ridiculous!
